2021 Cult MTL Best of Montreal Cheat Sheet (by 9to5.cc)

So obviously I want you to vote for 9to5.cc as Best Website and either 9ES or Go Plug Yourself as Best Podcast in Montreal over at Cult MTL’s Best of Montreal reader poll but you have to vote for a minimum of 25 categories for your ballot to be counted.

Now, if you have 25 amazing things to vote for in Montreal then good on you, but if you don’t I will happily share my picks with you and let you cheat off my test. 

I’m cool like that.

Hottest Montrealer: Plastik Patrik

One time at a Montreal Roller Derby game I overheard a drunken fan proclaim “wow, that announcer is hot… I don’t know if it’s a guy or a girl but damn.” 

Coolest Montreal Company:  Scorpion Masqué

I play a lot of board games and Montreal based Scorpion Masqué produced a game literally called “Stay Cool” so they win. Coolest company.

Best Weirdo: Hollywood

Hollywood used to be a mainstay on many an old episode of Go Plug Yourself, just popping by to sing into the microphone mid interview. Haven’t seen him in a while. Hope he’s ok. He’s got my vote forever in this category.

Best Politician: Tyler Lemco

If enough of us vote for Tyler as the best politician in Montreal he will basically HAVE to run for mayor again.

When all of this pandemic nonsense is over the very first thing you should do is head on down to Grumpy’s and spend a bunch of money there.

Best Bar and Best Sleazy Bar: Grumpy’s

They let us record a podcast there man, give them all the votes you can.

Best Wine Bar: LOIC

They haven’t been on the podcast, yet, but still my favorite place for wine in the city.

Best Live Music Venue: Turbo Haus

Sergio let us record a podcast there like we were real rockstars.

Best Promoter: I LOVE NEON

When we start being able to go out again I will be clearing my calendar and going to every party I LOVE NEON throws.

Best Terasse: Also Turbo Haus.

Last summer I spent a lot of time looking at Instagram posts of terraces in the city and cringed at the lack of safe social distancing. Not so with Turbo Haus. They kept that shit safe.

Best Comedy Club: Comedy Nest

Again, when they were allowed to do shows, they did them safely. That counts for a lot and it’s an important step in bringing live comedy back to this city.

Best Comedy Night: Battle of Wits

Elspeth Wright’s comedy gameshow that has been converted into an online format is the best. Bonus: Elspeth is raising money for AMI-Quebec all month long.

Best Cocktail Bar: Milky Way

Haven’t had these guys on the podcast yet but they’re in my neighborhood and they make good cocktails.

Music

Best Band: We Are Monroe

We had these guys on the podcast to promote their 2019 appearance at Osheaga and they were really cool. They’ve got some new stuff coming out you should check out.

Heaviest Act: Great Sabatini

The guys from Great Sabatini are the best, and still have one of the all time best stories ever shared on their episode of GPYS. You should check that episode (and all the episodes) out.

Best Hip Hop: Urban Science Brass Band

It was a while ago but we had Josh Clarke aka Scynical on the show and he talked up Urban Science Brass Band, if you haven’t checked them out you’re missing out. 

Best Singer-songwriter: Johnny Griffin (John Jacob Magistry)

Best Label: Stomp Records

I don’t think we’ve had more artists from a single record label than from Stomp records. BCASA, Boids, Kingpins, Planet Smashers have all called Stomp Records home.

Cinema & Arts

Best Actor: Michael Mando

The fact that Michael Mando has been a guest on GPYS three times speaks volumes to the fact that we are in fact, quite likeable.

Best Film Screening Series: Fantasia

A lot of festivals took some time off last year, but Fantasia was able to pivot to being an online festival and it was great. One of the high points of the year honestly.

Best Play: Malunderstood

In early 2020, Kenny Streule brought his one person show “Malunderstood” to Mainline, and in early 2021, he brought a digital adaptation of that show to the internet. Heartwarming.

Best Comedian: Take your pick

There are a million great comedians in this city, so take your pick. Ok, maybe there are about 20. I’m obviously biased in favor of the ones who co-host podcasts with me so if you need a pick choose between: Walter Lyng, Lawrence Corber, Inés Anaya and Chris Venditto, because they’re all the best.

Best Festival: Osheaga

I don’t think there is one thing that Sarah talks about missing on a regular basis than Osheaga weekend. This is literally the first time since the festival began that two years will have passed without it being a part of our summer.

Goods & Services

Best Barbershop: Monthly

One of the boys from Monthly has been cutting my hair for what feels like forever. Best shop in town I say.

Best Tattoo Parlour: DFA

I used to work at a call center with Mel back when she was a tattoo apprentice. Now she’s a world renowned tattoo artist and the whole gang at DFA Tattoos is the best.

Best Tattoo Artist: Sean Arsenian

One of those tattoo artists is Sean, who has been on the show to promote Great Sabatini, Sweetheart Grip and also played our live show back before the pandemic. He also tattooed my leg.

Best Used CD/Vinyl Store: Cheap Thrills

Go there on Thursdays and Jason will tell you what jazz records belong in your collection. 

Best Jewellry: Chokitem

Daian (also from Aller Retour) came on the show last year to talk about some of her time in fashion and also to rep some of the amazing pieces available at Chokitem. 

Food & Drink

Best Sandwich: Clarke

It’s got coffee and makes great sandwiches and is like a 5 minute walk from my house, what’s not to love? 

Best Coffee: Tunnel

One of the main things I miss about going to work downtown was daily coffee breaks at Tunnel Espresso. 

Best Ice Cream: Florence

You know what I wrote about Clarke Café up there? Replace “great sandwiches” with “great ice cream and gelato” and the same thing is true.

Montreal Roller Derby – Artoo & Why So Sirius – GPYS 154

Two of the members  of Montreal Roller Derby and part of the coaching staff of the 2017 Beast of the East champions, La Racaille, join Walter and I in preparation for next week’s Beast of the East roller derby tournament. Both Artoo and Sirius are members of Montreal’s WFTDA A team the New Skids on the Block in addition to their coaching duties of one of MTLRD’s home teams. We talk about how they came to play in Montreal and a whole lot of roller derby. For more information about the Beast of the East tournament, go here. And for tickets, go here. 25 Things You Should Vote For on Cult MTL’s Best of Montreal 2018

It’s that time of year again. Time to vote for the Best of Montreal 2018. Where you vote for the best things in 2017? I guess.

Where the city of Montreal comes together and sends in votes to decide on the authoritative list of what is best in life. In Montreal.

Cult MTL’s “Best of Montreal” list comes to a close this Sunday night, which means you have between now and then to vote for your favorite things.

You need to vote in 25 categories for your vote to count, so in case you don’t have 25 of your own, I’m providing a handy list of 25 things I think are worthy of your votes!

Is this list heavily influenced by people who’ve been guests on our podcast? Yes.

If you DO have 25 things of your own, I sincerely hope that 9to5.cc and our podcasts are among them!

#3 Best Sports Personality

Pat Laprade is our vote here and he’s had a hell of a 2017. He released 2 books and also now co-hosts the Quebec French Language version of WWE’s Monday Night Raw. You know what? Give him #18 also as “Best TV Personality”.

#13, 14 and 15 Best Radio Station and Best Radio Show and Radio Show Host

CJLO and Danny Payne’s show The Pressure Drop are our choice here. CKUT is the closest thing we’ve got to real independent radio (sorry Bell Media and Virgin or whatever) and Danny Payne does a great job every week with The Pressure Drop (and also because Heather B doesn’t have a show in Montreal anymore).

#20 Best Newspaper

Now, I know it’s kind of self-serving, but the only newspaper that wrote about us this year was Cult MTL when they covered our 150th Episode of Go Plug Yourself. So whatever, vote Cult MTL as the best newspaper.

#21 Best Website

It had better be this website. Please. 9to5.cc is all I live for. You can vote for us as Best Twitter and Instagram too, but that’s not really our thing.

#25 Best Podcast

With all due respect to 9ES and Pat on the Mat, Go Plug Yourself has been on the list for 6 years running. Please help keep that streak alive.

#25 Best Bartendar

Ram from Grumpy’s. Because he lets us record podcasts at the back and one day he will be a guest on Go Plug Yourself. We should get on that.

#28 and 29 Best Bar and Best Sleazy Bar

I don’t why there’s a distinction. Grumpy’s deserves to win both.

#33 Best Underground Venue

You know what? Even if they’re not around right now, they will be around soon. And they were around for most of 2017. Turbo Haus and Sergio get my vote.

#43 Best Comedian

You know that Walter J. Lyng and I have a podcast that has over 150 episodes right? That’s because I decided that I was only going to host a podcast with the BEST COMEDIAN IN MONTREAL.

#50 Best Band

Men I Trust has been absolutely my favorite discovery in local music of 2017, so they have my vote for Best Band this year.

#52 Freakiest Act

The Screaming Demons feature fake blood in their shows and all their songs are about horror movies, what more do you need to know?

#54 Heaviest Act

What the hell Cult MTL? You have “Best Electronic” and “Best Country” and “Best Jazz” and “Heaviest” but not “Best Punk”? Ripcordz get my vote here because Best Punk should absolutely be its own category.

#63 Best Actor

Mike Paterson. That guy’s voice is on TV like 10 times a day.

#64 Best Filmmaker

Adam Reider is the only filmmaker to have been on our show multiple times. He’s also the only filmmaker I know from Montreal.

#72 Best Cartoonist

Sophie! From our comic!

#77 Best Wrestler

My vote goes to Big Magic in large part because Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens don’t answer our phone calls.

#79 Best Wrestling Promotion

BATTLEWAR see above.

#83 Best Barber

Monthly Barbershop is how I keep my hair so fresh. It’s weird to me that I haven’t had Simon on the show to talk about that.

#107 Best Skate Shop

Low Life skate shop has my vote. Montreal’s only derby related skate shop.

#141 Best Burger

Chez Tousignant changed my life.

#165 and 166 Best Coffee Place and Best Coffee Beverage

Maybe because I’m not a teenager or a graphic designer and I don’t just endlessly hangout in coffee shops, my brain really doesn’t make the distinction. I go to the place with the best coffee. It’s the best coffee place. It’s Tunnel Espresso.

Go Plug Yourself 128: Tranna Wintour Returns

Walter and I realized that it had been an awful long time since we talked a lot about Jennifer Lopez movies on the podcast. We also realized we had just the way to remedy it. Naturally, it was high time that we had Tranna Wintour return to the podcast under the pretense of promoting her ongoing movie screening show Trannavision (next show is Spice World by the way) but that quickly devolves into talking about JLo, Riverdale and soap operas. More Shameless Picks for Best of Montreal (2016)

bom16-Banner-5So last year, Go Plug Yourself was one of the Best Podcasts in Montreal, as voted by you, the loyal listeners. You know what really stuck in our craw? It came in behind Serial. Now, I’m pretty sure that’s not a podcast that is produced in, or even about, Montreal.

Hey, you know what the best Asian food I’ve had this year was? It was Momofuko noodle bar. I might as well just vote that. Oh wait, that’s in Toronto. But it doesn’t matter since apparently people in Montreal don’t care about things that are actually made in Montreal, they just vote for Serial.

But I digress.

Now that I’ve  yelled at you, you should GO HERE and vote for the Best of Montreal 2016.

As always, in order for any of your votes to matter you need to vote in at least 25 categories. So, in the name of complete and total self-interest (and the interest of people who I’m personally interested in seeing succeed) I give you my 25 choices for what you should vote on in this year’s Cult Montreal Best of Montreal.

1) Best Sports Personality – Les Canadiennes de Montreal

That’s right, there’s no category for “Best Sports Team” for some reason, even though we’ve got several. But our CWHL team went to the finals this year and generally kicked ass. They should get some kind of recognition. In the form of a mention on a list in a free newspaper. They should get other recognition too, but this would be a good start.

My Shameless Votes for Best of Montreal

Best-of-MTL-2015As you may know, one of our little podcats (Go Plug Yourself) was voted the #3 Podcast in Montreal this year. Walter is pretty adamant about getting number 1 and is threatening to shut the whole thing down if we don’t succeed. We’re not 100% sure what he’s talking about, but the threat seems pretty legitimate. Maybe he’s talking about shutting down the podcast, or maybe the website, or maybe the entire internet? Who knows? Either way, in order for any of your votes to matter you need to vote in at least 25 categories.
