GPYS 338: Walter J. Lyng Headlines Comedy Nest!

In case you haven’t heard the co-founder of Go Plug Yourself Mister Walter J. Lyng himself is headlining the Comedy Nest for the first time ever this Sunday June 28th at 8 pm, he’s also turning 40! To celebrate we bought a train ticket for the one and only Inés Anaya to come back to Montreal to help celebrate this historic confluence of events. We also paid for Troy Stark’s travel arrangements to come to Grumpy’s all the way from NDG. We did neither of these things. The four of us got together to catch up, talk about Walter’s 20 years of comedy and of course Taskmaster.

GPYS 335: Troy Story 40

Ever since Troy Stark came back to Montreal a few years ago he’s been an important part of the Montreal comedy scene. Not only performing, but also producing some of the best local comedy events this city has to offer. So when the opportunity came up to have some of Montreal’s funniest folks gather together and celebrate Troy turning 40 on Go Plug Yourself we had to take it. Erik Intrevado, Daniel Carin and Sarah Warren join Chris Venditto, Walter J. Lyng and I to celebrate all things Troy Stark. He’s read 10 books this year already!

What ensues is obviously something akin to our annual Shit Shows but hey, isn’t that part of the fun?

We’ve got stories of concealed weapons, alcohol on planes, smuggling drugs across state lines and getting tossed into the back of a cop car because someone was playing with a toy gun while wearing a trench coat in the 1990s. If this is our last episode it’s because we’re all now in jail.

The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks comedians Shosho Abotouk & Serag Meletian: “What’s your favorite breakfast cereal both now and as a kid?” That question asked, as always, by our previous guest Nazeer Khan.

You may remember that we had Shosho on the show a few months ago to talk about the runaway success story of merging comedy with crochet. Well, she’s at it again and this time she’s got our own Walter J. Lyng and longtime friend of the show Serag Meletian bringing the laughs as The Crochet & Comedy show takes over historic Café Cleopatra for The Yarn Ball on February 28th. There will even be prizes!

Things go off the rails as they so often do and we end up talking with Shosho and Serag about Devon Sawa, telegrams, payphones and Bad Bunny. What else did you expect? We’re back at Grumpy’s for this one and fully embody the spirit of the chaotic safespace that is this wacky little podcast. GPYS Rewind: Mick Foley (2012)

Interviewing Mick Foley back in 2012 was crazy. We had been doing this show for less than a year at the time and the circumstances of sitting down with the Hardcore Legend at 3:00 in the morning still blow my mind.

But we did it.

The fact that in the ensuing 13 years Walter would go on to hang out with Mick Foley multiple times, including opening for him a few years back at the Montreal Comiccon is extra crazy.

We’ve gone from a few hundred (if we were lucky) downloads a month to several thousand. We’ve grown as a show and having amazing guests like Mick Foley definitely helped put us on the map.

I don’t think I’ll ever get over being allowed to just set up a computer at a Just for Laughs party and record with whoever wanted to chat. The other crazy thing is that at the time of recording Walter and I were both still in our 20s and Mick was in his 40s. Time flies.

Anyways, the more things change, the more things stay the same. Mick Foley is back in Montreal returning to the historic Café Cleopatra TOMORROW NIGHT October 2nd. As of recording this episode there are still some tickets available so get them now! Multiple tiers of tickets available now at Eventbrite.

If Go Plug Yourself had the budget of Saturday Night Live maybe we would invest in a 5 Timer jacket. Recorded live at Mainline Theatre on St-Laurent Boulevard, Walter and I welcomed a parade of some of the most talented Montrealers ever to grace a single episode of a podcast!

Joining us for the whole episode is none other than our resident musically talented friend (and provider of our theme song) Leighland Beckman!
