9ES 372: She Suddenly Likes Earth

by on October 1, 2026 at 8:47 pm
Posted In: 9ES, Podcast, Podcasting

A friend of mine saw Teenage Sex and Death At Camp Miasma by himself and apparently when he left the movie theater he found himself immediately wishing he had watched it with someone else so he could talk about it.

I feel the same way. I mean, I saw it Sarah but as much as my wife rules and loves genre films (as evidenced from the Fantasia Podcast Series we do together) she is not a fan of dissecting movies with me.

That’s why I have this podcast. Unfortunately, Jon and Scott haven’t seen Camp Miasma yet so sadly the conversation is a little one sided. But you should see it. You should listen to this episode and then rent Camp Miasma. I’ve planned your day.

We do get to rank a few movies for The List though which is become a bit of a rarity these days where two or more of us have all seen the same movie. The monoculture is dead you guys.

Jon and Scott both saw the new Supergirl movie so we get their takes on that and then Scott finally took my advice from episode 354 and watched Predator: Badlands. He even has some of the exact same hot takes as I did back then and thinks it ties in really with Alien: Earth. So listen to my version in episode 354 and listen to his version today.

Over on Garbage Time we finally talk about Southland Tales since it’s been a while. A quick search of the ole’ 9to5.cc website tells me that at least some of episode 150 was about Southland Tales. Episode 150 was 8 years ago so it’s fine that we talk about it now behind a paywall. That’s capitalism for you! We also sneak in a little wrestling talk with a classic round of “AEW vs WWE” and round things off with softball and Star Wars. “Softball & Star Wars” could be the title of Scott’s hip-hop mixtape.

9ES 371: We Should Buy A Video Store

Posted In: 9ES, Podcast, Podcasting

When I think about things from my formative years that people will definitely think of as old time and quaint within a few years, “video store” is always near the top of my list.

Video rental stores perhaps even more so.

The idea of paying money and risking pretty exorbitant late fees to bring a video cassette to your home for a few days must seem incredibly foreign now to the youth of today. The library still exists but that’s the library, it’s basically free! And it certainly doesn’t smell of popcorn and have a big “Blockbuster” sign outside.

Anyways, the vast majority of this episode pays homage to one of the great video rental traditions of yesteryear: the staff recommendations.

Starting in my later high-school years and well into college the first stop at any trip to the video rental store was the staff recommendations. Doubly so if there was a staffer that you had hit it off with in the past whose tastes aligned with yours. These folks watched movies all day. I was only going to be watching one movie this weekend. Their picks, and by extension their expertise, were invaluable. Ideally these weren’t new releases or movies everyone has already seen a dozen times, these were diamonds in the rough that only the seasoned video rental employee had seen. And, if you trusted them enough perhaps you would find your new favorite movie that nobody else had seen before.

So today we do the exercise: What are 9ES’ staff picks? This will likely become a recurring segment.

Garbage Time starts off pretty firmly rooted in yet another nostalgic trip down memory lane: we half-remember the joys of Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law. We also catch up on some of early feelings regarding Lanterns and Widow’s Bay. Then the old nostalgia monsters rears its head again and we close things off with some half baked memories of the 2000s run of Battlestar Galactica.

9ES 370: Going to the Punk Rock Show

I think historically I’ve probably been to the Vans Warped Tour more than Scott has but here we are in the year 2026 and I was sitting home and our boy Scott was out there at the Vans Warped Tour watching punk rock, skateboarding and pro-wrestling like it’s 1997.

How much did tickets to the Warped Tour cost this year? I’m not even sure. Pretty sure it was more than $30 I paid when I was in high school though.

Montreal has always been a city that has loved punk rock. You don’t even need to look that far back to see the two nights of sold out shows at Olympic Park for NOFX last year. Of course, that was 2024. Not last year at all. Time is a flat circle and also meaningless.

Scott went to both days of Vans Warped Tour this year AND went to go see Chance the Rapper celebrate the 10th anniversary of Coloring Book in the span of two weeks. Big week for the big man with bad knees.

Anyways, I saw Spiderman: Brand New Day and while it was definitely one of my favorite recent Marvel movies I have some strong opinions. Some of those opinions are definitely nits that I’ve picked but they are frustrating because it’s so close to being actually good and not just superhero good.

If you want to check out Garbage Time Scott continues his discovery of modern video games and talks a little about his time playing No Man’s Sky. Jon watched Robert Eggers’ The Northman and shares his takes. Scott has also been watching some new TV starting off with the new season of Reacher and the first episode of Lanterns. Finally I get you up to date with what you’ve all been waiting for: Draft mode in Marvel Snap.

So I’ve been with Sarah over 18 years. In that time we have watched probably hundreds of horror movies. We’ve both got a stomach for even some of the more “hardcore” films the like of High Tension and Martyrs. Heck – we watched A Serbian Film in theaters at Fantasia. But there was always one movie that was too horrific for her to ever consider watching. That film? Gremlins.

Why?

“Because they pop out of the toilet.”

For years I have tried to tell her that first of all, that’s Gremlins 2: The New Batch and that second of all: she’s a grownup now and hard as that hit when she was a kid there is just no way that scene bothers her anymore. Well, it took 18 years but after listening to the “What Went Wrong” podcast episode of Gremlins she finally decided to watch it with me.

Damn that movie is great. More unhinged puppets in films please.

We also watched Backrooms but honestly there’s so much more to say about Gremlins if I’m being honest.  I also went to Osheaga and we talk about that a little but you can listen to a whole episode of the show I do with Sarah if you want to know more about all that.

Anyways, over on Garbage Time Scott has discovered modern video games. He played through Red Dead Redemption and his eyes were opened. Video games are a lot different now. Even a game that is 13 years old is still drastically more involved and has better storytelling than the games he was playing circa 2001. Remember Scott, 2001 was 25 years ago.

9ES366: Sold Out Jazz

If you haven’t seen the photos of the massive crowd that Angine de Poitrine drew at the Jazz Fest last weekend you should do yourself a favour and check them out. I haven’t really hear precise estimates of attendance but I think it’s easily around 100,000 people based on what I know of the layout and rough capacity.

We’ve talked a little bit about what makes Angine de Poitrine the band of the moment right now and I think their popularity is almost a direct rejection of AI. Something that sounds and looks so different from everything else while still being pretty accessible just pierces through the monoculture slop that seems to be everywhere. These guys rule and I’m glad the world is getting a taste of some weirdo Quebecois culture.

Scott talks at length about Rambo: Forces of Freedom which he presumably stumbled up while watching the MAXOUT POWERBLOCK over on YouTube. I love how toy and cartoon adaptations of R-Rated movies were a thing in the 80s and I’m a little bummed we don’t see more of that anymore. Where are my Requiem for a Dream animated specials? Why can’t I play with my Midsommar playset with real old-people-jumping-off-cliff action?

Anyways, over on Garbage Time Jon watched Fury Road and things have grown even murkier in his mind about what movie should top our Movie List. He also watched David Cronenberg’s Crash and now we’re all wondering if we should be turned on by car wrecks. We finish things off talking about the final season of Euphoria and Back to the Future.

9ES365: YEAR ONE

by on June 21, 2026 at 5:43 pm

So Sarah broke her leg pretty badly a few weeks ago so we kick this episode off with our first hand experiences with the Quebec healthcare system. You know, the Quebec healthcare system that Scott works for? I guess we’re kind of experts on the subject.

You heard it here first, this podcast is a medical drama now.

Against my better judgement I watched about 10 minutes of UFC Freedom 250 (it was in between periods of Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final). It was… something else. From some jackass yelling “Michelle Obama is a man” to chants of “Fuck Him Up!” ringing out across the White House lawn it was pure Idiocracy.

Meanwhile, Danhausen is an actual dark magician and the Knicks win the big NBA award trophy thanks to his dark powers. If I asked you, what is the name of the NBA Championship trophy, what would you guess? I’m sure Scott knows the answer. I had to look it up. It’s technically the Larry O’Brien Championship trophy. You heard it here first.

Keith is almost done with Euphoria Season 3 and it’s a heck of a left turn. It’s honestly pretty good, but has almost nothing to do with the first two seasons. It’s kind of like in Season 8 of Archer when they’re suddenly in 1947 Los Angeles. It’s got the same characters but it also really has very little to do with everything that came before.

Over on Garbage Time Jon makes the argument that The Matrix should probably be at the very top of The List and he might be right. It (along with Alien) could definitely jump a few spots. We finish things off talking about whether or not Ridley Scott is a fraud and close off with Scott’s recent viewing of The Thing as a family affair.

9ES364: Beef Producers

There’s more than a few photos kicking around of Brendan Gallagher, Andrei Markov and Tomas Plekanec all together on the Habs. They were all on the team from 2012 when Gallagher got called up to Markov’s departure at the end of the 2016-2017 season. All three of those guys played over 900 games for the bleu-blanc-rouge. I feel like only Markov has a real chance of having his number up in the rafters and even then I wouldn’t consider it a lock.

All the same Brendan Gallagher is certainly a player who I think most Habs fans will remember fondly for a very long time.

Pretty sure it’s the right time to move on, the team is younger and poor Gally is just not going to be a part of whatever the final form of this roster looks like. Still I can be a little sad about a guy who has often been described as “the heart and soul” of the team no longer wearing the CH.

Plus during the pandemic he did some genuinely funny tiktok videos. Even if they’re just lip-synching to scenes from TV shows that’s still more personally than we see from 99% of hockey players.

He posted one when they were going into the weird hockey bubble set to the Hunger Games theme song that I can’t find and that was extremely funny.

Anyways, apparently screw worms are coming to America this summer. I guess look it up on the internet if you want to get extra grossed out.

Scott and Jon both watched Ron Howard’s 2015 movie about Moby Dick In The Heart of the Sea and it seemed that they both were pretty mixed on the whole thing.

Finally, Scott still really, really hates Andor. You’d think it starred Matt Damon or something.

Over on Garbage Time we talk about how crazy it is that Marvel and DC still work month to month and pay artists and writers by the page when they’re now controlled by monstrous entities like Disney and Warner Bros. We then discover that there is SO MUCH MORE Walking Dead than you think there is.

9ES363: Nimble And It’s Weird

by on May 24, 2026 at 11:35 pm
Posted In: 9ES, Podcast, Podcasting

It’s a pretty big shame that we didn’t fantasy book how Ronda Rousey would fare in the Mortal Kombat tournament. There was such an obvious throughline between the MMA talk, Brock Lesnar and Mortal Kombat II and it was right there in front of us.

Shame.

Would Ronda Rousey last more than 17 seconds against Baraka or Goro? Of course not. She essentially only has one move and good luck catching a guy with knife-hands in an armbar. Would Goro even care if you caught one of his four beefy arms in an armbar? Probably not.

You know who might do well in Mortal Kombat? Victor Wembanyama. We talk a little about “The Alien”, who is 7’4″ with a nearly 8 foot wingspan from fingertip to fingertip. If you’ve got 20 minutes you can watch the full video of 60 highlights but I’ve timestamped number 9 to give you an idea of how weird this guy moves compared to just about anybody else who’s ever played basketball.

Anyways, all that to say Scott saw Mortal Kombat II over the weekend and we’re pleased to report that it continues and maybe even improves upon 2021’s excellent reboot of the series. Injecting Carl Urban into any franchise is a surefire winner I always say.

Finally, we’ve got a very special episode of Garbage Time for you this week where we talk a LOT about 2007’s Ghost Rider starring Nicholas Cage. This movie is basically everything you could possibly want from a film where Nicholas Cage plays a stuntman who’s head catches on fire who rides a motorcycle and hunts down demons and bad guys. Oh and he also drinks jellybeans out of a martini glass. There is just no way that was in the script. That’s pure Cage baby. Enjoy.

9ES362: False Prophets

by on May 11, 2026 at 11:41 pm

If you have not been following hilarious drama surrounding The Onion’s attempt to purchase InfoWars then you’re missing out. Look, it’s even being reported on the BBC.

Something that I did not actually know about InfoWars is that Alex Jones thinks of himself as a kind of prophet. Well, at least Tucker Carlson thinks so.

“He’s channeling something, I’ve asked him about it. ‘How did you do that?’ At length, during dinner on my barn recently. We’re talking about this. ‘How’d you do that?’ ‘I don’t know. It just came to me.’ And that’s real. That is real. The supernatural is real and I don’t know why it’s hard for for the modern mind, I guess because it’s a materialist mind to accept that.”

“That’s not a new phenomenon. It’s happened throughout history. There are people called prophets, and there are people who were prophets who weren’t called prophets, but there are people who have information or parts of information, bits of information, visions of information come to them and then they relay it.”

We’re in the wrong business, kids.

Anyways, we talk a little about some upcoming horror flicks, namely Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil and Mike Flanagan’s Clayface, both of which have trailers that are out now.

We kick things off by talking about the unlikely Game 7 victory of the Montreal Canadiens over the Tampa Bay Lightning but I promise you we get good and nerdy after that’s out of the way.

On this week’s Garbage Time we talk about how and why Eurotrip practically killed an entire film genre (and here’s the link the video that I reference), Jon watched Crank: High Voltage which leads to a deep dive into Jason Statham’s career and we wrap things up with, you guessed it, more hockey talk because the Habs are still in the playoffs and 66% of us love ourselves some hockey!

9ES361: Slow Creep

by on April 26, 2026 at 10:53 pm

Even though this episode is only coming out on April 23rd (if Jono edits it on time) I can assure you that it was recorded on April 20th. You know… the stoner day. 420 bay-bay. Anyways, that’s the flimsy excuse for why we spend time talking about Sublime and Cypress Hill. There’s a lot to unpack but the gist of it is that the drummer from Sublime is a MAGA Trump supporter. Then Cypress Hill dropped out of the Sublime festival this summer that is run by a big MAGA donator.

Many suspect that is the reason Cypress Hill dropped out of the festival.

Four twenty blaaaaazzeee yeeeeahhhh.

Anyways, a lot of music talk in this one. We talk about Nine Inch Noize (the recent collaboration between Nine Inch Nails and Boys Noize), Angine de Poitrine and Diplo kind of being the worst. The future of music might be AI slop but I don’t need to like it.

We wrap things up with with some Stephen King adaptations with Jon watching The Long Walk and Scott finishing off Welcome to Derry.

Over on Garbage Time we talk about Nirvanna the Band the Show (specifically the webseries which is mercifully well preserved on this website), provide our Wrestlemania 42 takes, talk about the Habs vs the Bolts in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs and wrap up talking about Shoresy Season 5. Oh also Matt clarified that they use “Army” as an end-credit song for Nirvanna The Band The Show because it’s one of Jay’s favorite bands and it’s one of the first things he ever shared with Matt. Mystery solved. Thanks Reddit!.
