I joke during this episode that Dawn McSweeney is joining Walter J. Lyng, Troy Stark and I to do a victory lap following this year’s amazing edition of the World’s Smallest Comedy Festival but the truth is the great producers of this town never rest on their laurels. Troy and Dawn are teaming up to co-host “Dumpster Fire” on September 25th at Cafe Cleopatra, a comedy show dedicated to the trash, the wild cards, the unhinged stories, and the lovable dirtbags who make life interesting, headlined by Go Plug Yourself’s very own Chris Venditto. The Montreal podcast that asks Montreal actor and filmmaker Sam Félix: If you had could run your own festival, what would that festival be? That question asked by the boys of summer back in episode 340 talking about the World’s Smallest Comedy Festival 4.

With festival season almost in our rear view it’s time to return to our regularly scheduled episodes of Go Plug Yourself – this week Lawrence Corber and I were back at Grumpy’s to sit down with one of Montreal’s many talented citizens. This time around we were talking with Sam Félix. Sam is an actor and director who’s been working on projects all over the city and most recently directed the short film “Skeleton Crew” written by Erin Ross that recently screened at the Fantasia International Film Festival which of course is one of our favourite Montreal festivals. We talk about acting, directing, film and so much more so sit back, relax and Go Plug Yourself.

9ES 368: Jon Wants To Talk About Weird Al

If you haven’t seen the clip of Tommaso Ciampa pulling a Bobby Orr jersey out of a trash can in the middle of a hardcore match at AEW Redemption then you can probably go ahead and do that now.

Or don’t. (That’s what they call a “callback“).

AEW had their first pay-per-view in Montreal and I was happy to have made it out. Seeing Kenny Omega hit the One-Winged Angel in the middle of the Bell Centre is kind of like the wrestling equivalent to seeing Sidney Crosby score an OT game winner live. We spend the first half of the episode giving a rundown of the whole PPV so fair warning there.

You know who else was in town this weekend? The one and only Weird Al Yankovic. Jono took his kid to see him at Just for Laughs and endured a massive crowd and a run of openers who apparently thought working blue in front of a family-friendly parody legend was a solid booking choice.

Meanwhile Scott’s been watching Ride or Die on Prime and is fully on board with Hannah Waddingham as a tall, terrifying spy who still has a best friend who has no idea she kills people for a living. Scott’s take that it’s basically the first half of Kingsman if Kingsman didn’t get stupid is a pretty interesting endorsement tbh.

GPYS 339: World’s Smallest Comedy Festival 4 (w/ Dawn McSweeney & Abby Stonehouse)

Go Plug Yourself Rewind: Amy Blackmore 2021

So normally this time of year Sarah and I would be interviewing a bunch of artists performing at the Montreal Fringe Festival and up until last Wednesday I promise you: that was the plan.

Then, unfortunately, Sarah took a bad fall on a bike path while heroically saving a child and broke her leg pretty badly. 10 days in the hospital later she’s finally home and the Montreal Fringe Festival is in full swing but we’re not doing much of anything except for rehabilitating Sarah’s leg.

So that means for the first time in a long time, we won’t be Fringing this year.

It got me thinking: When was the last time we didn’t Fringe?

Oh right, that pesky pandemic.

Lawrence Corber and I sat down remotely in April 2021 with Amy Blackmore pretty much a full year into the pandemic.  So let’s take a trip down memory lane and enjoy that chat from 2021, shall we?

The Montreal Fringe Festival is in full swing and runs until June 21st, head to montrealfringe.ca for tickets and showtimes.

On this week’s episode we’re joined by the President of ACTRA Montreal Simon Peacock and the host of this year’s ACTRA Awards in Montreal Wassim El-Mounzer. Simon and Wassim talk about this year’s ACTRA Awards in Montreal, Canadian content, Degrassi and so much more. We have a fun conversation about what people look for today in entertainment and in our very humble opinions, maybe they’re looking for something different. Something unique. Something they’ve never seen before. Could that something be Canadian? Maybe we are all just a little sick of algorithms convincing us to watch the same old boring crap? Just maybe.

This year’s awards will be honoring members like Jacob Tierney, Duy Nguyen and Kirwan Cox and awarding nominees in categories like outstanding performances in television, films, video games and stunts. GPYS 335: Troy Story 40

Ever since Troy Stark came back to Montreal a few years ago he’s been an important part of the Montreal comedy scene. Not only performing, but also producing some of the best local comedy events this city has to offer. So when the opportunity came up to have some of Montreal’s funniest folks gather together and celebrate Troy turning 40 on Go Plug Yourself we had to take it. Erik Intrevado, Daniel Carin and Sarah Warren join Chris Venditto, Walter J. Lyng and I to celebrate all things Troy Stark. He’s read 10 books this year already!

What ensues is obviously something akin to our annual Shit Shows but hey, isn’t that part of the fun?

We’ve got stories of concealed weapons, alcohol on planes, smuggling drugs across state lines and getting tossed into the back of a cop car because someone was playing with a toy gun while wearing a trench coat in the 1990s. If this is our last episode it’s because we’re all now in jail.
