GPYS Flashback: Episode 150 Live Spectacular!

As occasionally happens when you’ve been podcasting for over a decade – sometimes a guest drops off the face of the planet (or the island of Montreal) and you’re left on a Wednesday night before a long weekend without a new episode of Go Plug Yourself.

Fortunately though we’ve got over 300 episodes in our back catalogue that we can dig up and re-share with you.

So we’re setting the clock back to 2018 for our 150th episode which was a live recording at the legendary Mainline Theater! Enjoy!

Here it is, the episode you’ve all been waiting for! Montreal’s longest running English language podcast is celebrating its 150th episode in style! Recorded live at Mainline Theatre on St-Laurent Boulevard, Walter and I welcomed a parade of some of the most talented Montrealers ever to grace a single episode of a podcast!

Joining us for the whole episode is none other than our resident musically talented friend (and provider of our theme song) Leighland Beckman!

The first guest on our show is none other than our French language podcast counterpart Yannick Belzil from 3 Bières!
Then we’re joined by the Hardcore Hero himself, The Green Phantom!
Finally, as he does for many of our milestone episodes, Television’s Mike Paterson joins us as well!

Andy Nulman – GPYS VINTAGE (Episode 62)

Comedy and Montreal might not be synonymous if it wasn’t for Andy Nulman.

If Andy Nulman had not co-founded the Just For Laughs in the early 80s would we even know what comedy was? Would I have become friends with comedians and started this podcast if it wasn’t for Andy Nulman? Who’s to say.

As you may have noticed, this is not a recent episode. This is actually a re-broadcast of episode 62 way back from July 10, 2014. Our voices sound a little different because our microphones are a little crappier, but we’re still in the back of Grumpy’s (a bar which Andy shares a great little story about). This remains one of my favorite episodes. Even if it does kind of ruin “Spinal Tap”.

It was great to sit down with one of the legends of Montreal’s night life and comedy scene Andy Nulman and hopefully if you’re a new listener this will encourage you to take a trip into our 240+ episode back catalog and see if there are any other vintage episodes that catch your eye.

The Montreal podcast that will forever and always hold Walter J. Lyng near and dear to its heart returns! Just like live shows!

It was 10 years ago in 2011 that Walter first brought Pitching Knife Fight to the Montreal Fringe Festival, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that later that same summer he would decide to start a podcast with me. I’m not sure exactly what the connection is or was but I’m sure it’s there.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of that momentous show Walter is bring “KNIFE FIGHT X” back to the Fringe. Is it a remount of Pitching Knife Fight? No. Is it Night Fight? Also no. It’s something in between and better baby! I mean, probably. I haven’t seen it.

To help Walter properly usher in this feat of one-man showmanship (featuring a number of other people) we need all the hosts, so that means that Lawrence, Inés and Chris are around to host this thing we’re still calling a podcast.

In the spirit of live theater I have not edited out some of the technical difficulties in this episode. Seriously, it’s in the spirit of live theater and not laziness I promise.

The greatest New Year’s podcasting tradition in Montreal continues with the latest installment of the Go Plug Yourself New Year’s Shit Show! This year we welcome comedians Inés Anaya, Daniel Carin and Vance Michel and professional wrestlers The Arsenal and The Green Phantom to have a few beers and reminisce about the year that was 2018.  As always this one gets a little sloppy so sit back, press play, and enjoy the sounds of a rowdy group of people at the back of a bar talking nonsense. Leighland and Aural Turpitude provide our theme song you see. Leighland brings his brand of musical comedy to not one, but two live talk shows in Montreal. Walter J. Joshua Clarke, aka Scynikal got to sign his name in the “Golden Book” of Montreal. That’s the same book that William Shatner signed man. Why? Because he was the 2016 EOW Freestyle Rap World Champion. I’ve never been World Champion of anything man. Josh is not just an amazing hip hop artist, he’s also a comedian. I’m not even a comedian.

Naturally, it was high time that we had Tranna Wintour return to the podcast under the pretense of promoting her ongoing movie screening show Trannavision (next show is Spice World by the way) but that quickly devolves into talking about JLo, Riverdale and soap operas. More Shameless Picks for Best of Montreal (2016)

bom16-Banner-5So last year, Go Plug Yourself was one of the Best Podcasts in Montreal, as voted by you, the loyal listeners. You know what really stuck in our craw? It came in behind Serial. Now, I’m pretty sure that’s not a podcast that is produced in, or even about, Montreal.

Hey, you know what the best Asian food I’ve had this year was? It was Momofuko noodle bar. I might as well just vote that. Oh wait, that’s in Toronto. But it doesn’t matter since apparently people in Montreal don’t care about things that are actually made in Montreal, they just vote for Serial.

But I digress.

Now that I’ve  yelled at you, you should GO HERE and vote for the Best of Montreal 2016.

As always, in order for any of your votes to matter you need to vote in at least 25 categories. So, in the name of complete and total self-interest (and the interest of people who I’m personally interested in seeing succeed) I give you my 25 choices for what you should vote on in this year’s Cult Montreal Best of Montreal.

1) Best Sports Personality – Les Canadiennes de Montreal

That’s right, there’s no category for “Best Sports Team” for some reason, even though we’ve got several. But our CWHL team went to the finals this year and generally kicked ass. They should get some kind of recognition. In the form of a mention on a list in a free newspaper. They should get other recognition too, but this would be a good start.
