Greetings gentle readers! I’ve spent the last few weeks riding the hype trains for Hamilton (the musical about the ten-dollar founding father without a father) and the Neapolitan novels by Elena Ferrante (UNIVERSAL STORY, EVERYONE GO READ THEM) and they took me far, far from Montreal. Luckily, I’ve managed to bring my thoughts a little bit closer to home with Z’Isle.
Z’Isle is a comic, game and web series about the Montreal residents who stayed on-island after the zombie apocalypse hits. I guess these are the people who didn’t make plans to meet their buddies in a Canadian Tire parking lot before heading for the hills, and they seem to be doing relatively okay. The scene starts seven years after the disaster begins, and the city has divided into a series of different strongholds that cooperate in order to survive. The recurring motto is “Trust. Trade. Hope.” ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
Yep, as I relistened to that part of the podcast, I remember thinking like “wow, 10 minutes of Bravest Warriors… so long.” What has happened to my attention span?
Comments Off on 9ES105: Our Attention Span Is Sufficiently Reduced That A 10 Minute Episode Of Bravest Warriors Is Now Considered Long Form Storytelling
Like many of us in Montreal, I do not have a dental plan provided by my work and I am currently unable to afford the cost of dental insurance. Being a university town , there are many new Montreal graduates facing this situation and thousands of individuals who have been facing it for decades.
The newest survey I could find from Health Canada said that in between 2007-2009, 34% of Canada had no dental insurance. Check it out here
So here is the cheapest dental plan around that I know of
The Cheapest Way to get Rid of a Toothache
This is salt. There are other white substances that may help with toothaches, but this is the cheapest by far.
So I don’t know if this will work for everyone and obviously not for every dental problem but I have found gargling with saltwater to be incredibly helpful when I get a toothache. And not just for your average toothache either.
Here is my personal experience.
Bad toothache (1 and 2):
These happened to me about 4 years and 2 years ago. The kind of throbbing pain that pendulums between a sharp stab to a dull ache.
I remember because I was living in one of those classic Montreal apartments with the really uneven floors in NDG and the second one happened when I lived right near 4 different dentists.
For both of these it just took a day of gargling with saltwater (gargle for about 15 to 30 seconds somewhere between 4 to 6 times a day). Afterwards the pain was gone and I could go on with my life.
Real bad toothache (the 3rd):
This toothache was crazy bad and it happened a few weeks ago. It sort of shifted around the right side of my mouth, sometimes leaving the whole thing in “stop everything” pain and rarely letting up. I had horrible times sleeping, barely getting any some nights. Couldn’t even tell which tooth was the bad one.
From looking online it seemed as if the tooth had become infected and was sending signals to the other nerves to go freaking nuts. There was also a worry that the infection had led to the blood stream because horrible shifting pain can be an indication of real bad infection.
I thought for sure that I would have to go to an emergency dental service. However, after gargling with saltwater the pain started to lessen. Granted, it took a full five days (the first 3 of which almost killed me) for all the pain to really disappear but eventually it completely went away.
This is Not a Replacement for Your Dentist
your teeth… if you were a life sized plastic person with removable parts.
I’m not a dentist and I do recommend going to see them when you have a problem.
But, if you are like me, then sometimes you have to save up to be able to go see them and that takes time. And saltwater gave me the time I needed.
Just through some salt in a glass of water until it tastes like the sea, swish it around for a bit and spit it out. Maybe it won’t help your particular situation but I doubt it can hurt.
If anyone knows any other tricks for the world’s cheapest dental plan then please feel free to mention it in the comments!
So there’s a half decent chance that you’ve seen that Mr. Montreal video floating around on the YouTubes. That’s the mascot of our city, and more specifically, a website. That website is VisitMTL.com. The website that promises to tell you about all sorts of cool shit around town whether or not your from here or just visiting. Jack and Kate, who are two of the creators of this ambitious endeavour, come along for the wild ride of talking with Walter and I for an hour. We talk about the drunk guy who flew into my car, baseball, Hurricane Hazel and of course, VisitMTL.com
Yes, that’s right it’s time for another magical sojourn with Scott, Keith and Jon. Listen as we ramble only semi-coherently on subjects about which we are insufficiently educated. Share!
Walter and I have always thought of Go Plug Yourself as a political podcast. Finally, after 86 episodes we’ve gotten a political guest. Even if his politics sort of overlapped with performance art, you’ve got to hand it to Chris Lloyd for comitting to a character. A few weeks ago the CBC “outted” Chris as a performance artist and that his most recent performance piece involved him running against Justin Trudeau in the Papineau riding as a Conservative candidate. The twist here is that Chris wasn’t actually a Conservative, well, he was a card carrying member of the party but maybe this is getting too confusing. You should probably listen to this episode to get the whole story of Chris’s politics, his art and exactly how this whole thing went down. Listen now!
Jon and I ran this episode duo this time around. The wee baby Archer was sick and Sophie was off being a pro-star makeup artist. So we compensated by talking about Dawson’s Creek. That’s how we do, enjoy the show everyone.
Almost exactly a year ago Scott Humphries and Jon Verrall came on our show to talk about Season 1 of LARPs: The Series, a web series about a group of friends who all shared the hobby of live action roleplaying. Now, the LARPs team is getting ready for Season 2. The past year was a big one for the LARPs crew, they built up their fanbase, appeared at GenCon and (perhaps most exciting of all) attracted the attention of Felcia Day who picked up LARPs: The Series for Geek and Sundry. With Season 2 just around the corner Charlotte Rogers (Brittany) and Jon Verrall (Evan/writer of the series) have come back to Go Plug Yourself to talk about the show, their Indiegogo campaign (donate now!) and of course get sidetracked by Walter and I rambling on about nonsense. Enjoy the show! (Note: Minor Season 1 Spoilers in first 5 minutes, rest is spoiler free).
Walter has been hinting to this for the past several episodes (listening to Go Plug Yourself is a lot like watching True Detective) so if you haven’t put it together yet this is the big reveal. Comedy Works as you knew it on 1238 Bishop St is re-opening under new management! Walter and Mike are working at filling up the bookings and Ian is going to be the General Manager. This is all pretty exciting. There’s a lot of confusing redirects and old websites swinging around the internet right now but if you’re interested in finding out what shows are coming up at the Comedy Works on Bishop street you need to check out http://www.comedyworksmtl.ca/ That’s pretty much the best way to figure out what’s up right now. We talk about the ‘Works, meats, and the great comedy acts coming up in the next few months that kicks off Thursday February 5th.
As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Aural Turpitude!
Comedy Works re-opens at 1238 Bishop St on February 5th with Massimo (Just For Laughs, on Spike TV’s Blue Mountain State and 2014’s blockbuster film X-Men: Days of Future Past) Morgan O’Shea (JFL’s Homegrown Competition 2014), Peter Radomski (JFL, Daily Show), Scott Carter, Emma Wilkie (Feb. 5), Chris Sandiford (Feb. 6 – early show), Jacob Greco (Feb. 6 – late show), Mike Carrozza (Feb. 7 – early show) and Jakub Stachurski (Feb. 7 – late show).
First of all, hats off to the good people (ok, I have no idea if they’re good people, let’s be fair, they make their living selling us stuff we really don’t need) of Loot Crate for getting me, a lowly Canadian, my December Loot Crate before the 25th. Yesterday morning I heard a knock on my door so I ran to put some pants on and get the door. The nice postman gave me (as promised) the biggest black box yet. I was pretty excited. For December, Loot Crate was themed for ANNIVERSARY. More than any other Crate I sort of had an idea what sort of stuff was going to be in here. The teaser email stated that this Crate was going to celebrate some of the great stuff that was celebrating an important year in 2014. So that narrowed it down. Ghostbusters, Marvel, Batman, Simpsons, Tetris… yeah, pretty good idea of the theme. So, let’s see what ended up being packed into this great big box.↓ Read the rest of this entry…
