The Montreal podcast that asks comedian, singer, songwriter and Big Brother contestant Tranna Wintour: What scene in a movie makes you so emotional it brings you to tears? That question asked by Adam Reider back in episode 262.

Tranna Wintour is an amazing Montreal talent and it seems that every time you blink her star manages to soar even higher. Between co-hosting her podcast Chosen Family, performing in both English in French, releasing an album and nearly winning the second season of Big Brother Célébrités I think you would be hard pressed to find a harder working talent in the city.

If that wasn’t enough, she’ll be featured on the final episode of Comedy Night in Canada with Rick Mercer in November! Oh, and by the way, since we’re talking about Comedy Night in Canada this a pretty good time to tell you that our own Inés Anaya will also be featured on an episode airing on October 25th.

Like I say in the intro of this episode: I’m surrounded by amazing talented people and I just talk to them and make a podcast out of it.

Hey, things could be worse.

9ES270: We Fired The Sound Guy

Montreal’s best podcast has the worst sound quality!

 

Seriously, before we kick things off we would obviously like to take a moment to acknowledge the abysmal sound quality of this episode. What is this, 2012? Basically we lost some of the “good” sound files and are forced to present you with some mutant Frankenstein backup version of the recording.

 

The content is still there though. We have to believe in the content.

 

There is so much content.

 

The theme of the show this week is drama.

 

Drama about shipping people in planes from Texas to Massachusetts, drama about chess Grand Masters possibly getting chess tips over the air via remote controlled anal beads in their butt and drama about one of hip-hop’s highest selling artists getting into a beef with an internet music critic.

 

Also Queen Elizabeth II died. We speculate whether or not Canada should cut ties with the UK and Scott brings up the idea that as a Canadian citizen you can go to a British embassy when you’re traveling abroad as a fun perk.

 

According to VisaPlace Canada has about 145 embassies and 185 Consulates across the world. The UK has 162 embassies and 185 consulates and 33 “other representations”.

 

Not a bad perk to more than double the number of places you can go to if you are proper fucked in another country.

 

This week’s episode of Garbage Time is yet another ultra special garbage spectacular! This week we take a look at the wonder that was Burt Sugarman’s “Midnight Special” before talking about some television shows that we’ve been watching like Sandman, Hacks and Harley Quinn, we also talk a little about BrightBurn. Adam Reider (Woodland Grey) Returns – GPYS 262

The Montreal podcast that asks indie filmmaker (and director of Woodland Grey) Adam Reider: “What do you ask for when your friend goes to Costco?” That question asked by Elspeth Wright and Raquel Maestre in episode 261.

 

It’s hard to believe that it was 5 years ago that we had Adam Reider on the show talking about Woodland Grey. He was so young, so optimistic, so ready to take on the world and make a movie.
Well, things don’t always turn out exactly the way we plan but at the end of the day Adam did make Woodland Grey, even if it wasn’t quite the film he imagined that it would be. We get deep into the many speedbumps, hurdles and barb wire fences that the production had to navigate. We dive into what happened vis a vis Bill Moseley, some less than pleasant financial issues, how the trailer was cut and more. This episode just might be the precursor to Adam touring the country to do Q&A’s about overcoming the odds in the face of making a first feature film.
Reminder of course to check out Woodland Grey on whatever streaming platform you can find it on (right now it’s on iTunes, Google, YouTube etc but only in Canada) but maybe even more importantly stay tuned to where you can actually get to see it on the big screen. If you live in Montreal you can do that THIS WEEKEND. That’s right, Adam’s film Woodland Grey will be screening this Saturday, September 17th as part of Montreal’s Requiem Fear Festival at Hotel Ruby Foo’s (7655 Decarie Blvd, Montreal, Quebec).
Oh, and on the off chance you live in New Jersey, Woodland Grey will be screening as part of the Smodcastle Film Festival! Whaaaaat.

9ES269: Thank Goodness For Heathers

We kick this episode off by talking about the CFO of Bed Bath and Beyond throwing himself out of a window to his death and the resulting ripples of armchair investors trying to recreate the magic of GameStop and navigate just what that suicide might mean for the stonk.

We then move on to what’s really on people’s minds right now: The Netflix adaptation of Sandman.

 

Now listen, I enjoy most of Neil Gaiman’s work. But I never really got heavily invested into Sandman. My old roommate had most of them so I occasionally read an issue or trade here and there but it never really clicked for me. And while I can recognize its place as an important fixture in the increased popularity of “alternative” comics I’m still not sold on it’s overall quality.

 

That said, the show is pretty enjoyable.

 

A part of me is watching it to do my small part to let Netflix know that they should continue to take risky projects and I hope Sandman gets a second season and somehow it also means that Cowboy Bebop comes back too.

 

This week’s episode of Garbage Time is yet another ultra special garbage spectacular! We apply our scientifically and peer tested list-making methodology to the Saturday Night Live films and rank them from best to worst. Spoiler-alert: they are mostly all the worst. 9ES268: Stop Going To See Avatar

The Montreal podcast that seems to be more interested in watching bad movies than good ones is back to talk about 2 movies you probably should not watch and 1 movie that you really should.


There is something deeply wrong with the fact that Jon willingly subjected himself to the lowest ranked movie on The List and not the critically acclaimed Number 1 movie on streaming services.


I was never fully a Predator guy. I mean, the first two came out before I was a teenager and then “Predators” came out when I was in my late 20s. So during the formative years of my movie watching there were only two Predator movies. The first one which was really cool and the second one which was kind of hokey and cheesy. 


But as we discuss in this episode, the first Predator (and even it’s shitty sequels to a lesser extent) is kind of an interesting take on typical action movies. It’s one of the rare instances where the heroes need to be really smart to take down the bad guy. No amount of machismo or firepower will take out a Yautja – only a really good plan has a chance.


That’s cool.


So I’m pretty excited that the franchise finally got a really good entry that actually holds up against the original. The fact that it prominently features an indigenous cast is also delicious icing on the cake of a really well executed film.


The Emoji Movie is meh. 


Reading about the ongoing saga of T.J. Miller’s broken brain on my phone while reading the movie was probably the most engaging part. This is a brain so broken that it actually held up as a defense against federal charges.


Fascinating.

Montreal’s most in-sync comedy podcast asks Abby Stonehouse and Michelle Dominique: “What you doing on a Monday?” – asked of course by Walter J. Lyng and Vance Michel back in episode 259.

As usual the conversation spirals out of control. I am pretty sure we hypothesize whether or not our parents are aware of the actual moment of our conception. We definitely talk quite a bit about boy bands and what your boy band crush might say about you. (Spoilers: If Kevin is your favorite Backstreet Boy it means you have daddy issues).

However, the REAL reason we have Abby Stonehouse and Michelle Dominique on the show is to talk about their project: Comedy on Demand: Lawn Laughs (and Lounge Laughs). 9ES267: The Bombastic Sequel

The Montreal podcast that really wants a Winnebago so that the three of them can just go on a big road trip to South Dakota is back with a brand new episode!

Sure we talk a little about some of the scary stuff going on in the world these days but do you know what we also talk about?

Prince.

Scott brings up a video of Prince suddenly popping out of the shadows during George Harrison’s posthumous induction as a solo artist into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 (he was already in as a Beatle) and emasculating Tom Petty, do yourself a favour and check it out. Prince absolutely steals the show, much to the delight of Dhani Harrison (who holy crap is the spitting image of George). While you’re doing yourself favours also look up Crazy Horse and the Crazy Horse Monument being carved in South Dakota. Both are dope. After weeks of dancing around the topic, all three of us have finally watched all of Stranger Things 4. We talk about our overall impressions, stuff we liked, didn’t like, fan theories and in a rare twist, we are (mostly) in agreement.

Meanwhile in Garbage Time, we talk about the Woodstocks that happened in the 90s and also a little bit about the latest in the Predator franchise: Prey. Both of these will certainly be more heavily spoken about in a main show in the future, so you should get yourself a sneak peak now. If you’ve been following the podcast in the last week or so you know we’ve had a few interviews with a couple of great out of town guests. However, at its heart, Go Plug Yourself is a show about Montrealers so it was only right that we brought in the Grand Daddy of Go Plug Yourself himself Walter J. Lyng along with Vance Michel and co-host Lawrence Corber to talk about some of the amazing local comedy going on this summer in Montreal.

Walter (along with Lawrence, Morgan O’Shea, Reese Turner and Derek Seguin) are bringing back Rad Dads once again this year to Café Cleopatra for Rad Dads Forever and Vance Michel will be a part of Harrison and Gab’s Video Comedy Night. Lawrence and Walter will both be appearing at  Figure It Out with Mike Carrozza and Lawrence will also be featured on the Discovery Series. Walter and Lawrence will also both be recording sets for an upcoming JFL Originals album.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL – Walter and Vance are also hosting The World’s Smallest Comedy Festival that’s already under way until July 29th at Hurley’s Irish Pub. 12 nights of amazing local comedy because you can’t get enough of that sweet sweet laughter.
