Montreal’s best podcast talks about what it might mean that Elon Musk now owns Twitter.

 

Imagine having enough money to buy something for $44 billion dollars. Man, something costing $44 billion dollars should be illegal. 

 

Avengers: Endgame made a little under $3 billion. Is Twitter like 15 times more valuable than Avengers: Endgame? I know which one I’d rather own.

 

We get pretty into DVD releases vs streaming releases and what kind of a second life a film can get once it leaves the cinema. Honestly one of our liveliest debates of the show in recent memory.

 

Because we love cinema.

 

So much so that we rank it.

The Montreal podcast that asks Jason Grimmer and Jess Fildes (of Terrors of Misery’s Grove): “Deep Space or Deep Sea?” – asked by the most electrifying man in Montreal entertainment: Mike Paterson.

We had Jason Grimmer on the show before talking about the injustices facing Montreal record shops back before that pesky pandemic – but this time we’ve got him talking about his other passion: improv. Pretty sure we talked about improv last time too, just roll with me here.

Jason Grimmer and Jess Fildes are taking on the unenviable task of mixing a veritable witches brew of improvisation, horror and podcasting in their latest endeavor: The Terrors of Misery’s Grove. Taking the form of an improvised folk-horror radio play that will be performed live in front of audience (the first episode is TONIGHT: October 27th at Variations Mile End) and then transforming it into a podcast to live on forever… on the internet!

We talk with Jason and Jess about developing the show, the challenges of improvising horror and of course a million other things (mostly horror related in spite of Inés’ attempts to the contrary) because this is the show that it is.

Inés Anaya steps in on co-hosting duties once again (how many more does she got left folks?) and we have a jolly good time recording this one at the back of our home away from home: Grumpy’s.

“My Bloody Valentine” is criminally underrated. I think it has worked it’s way into the annals of horror cult cinema but it should probably be propped up a lot closer to the Last House on the Left and Friday the 13ths of this world than it currently is. The fact that it is a Canadian film that is plainly filmed in Nova Scotia is just a delightful bonus. Bottles of Moosehead… everywhere.

 

There was a lot of backlash surrounding “Hocus Pocus 2” (The Hocus Pocusing) but honestly, it was fine. The original was not that great, and nothing in the sequel seemed that out of touch with the campiness of the original. That said “Hocus Pocus” was never really one of my childhood movies. To some people maybe this feels like the Star Wars prequels. I dunno.

 

We keep the spookiness rolling in this week’s episode of Garbage Time. We go over some of our Spooky Season go-tos and talk about what movies and TV shows we tend to gravitate too every October. Mike Paterson Returns! – Go Plug Yourself 264

The Montreal podcast that asks the most electrifying man in Montreal comedy Mike Paterson: If you could cast yourself in any movie, what role would you be? Asked by none other than Tranna Wintour back in episode 263.

Mike Paterson has been a guest on this show an incredible 7 times, but it has been 4 years since we’ve had the pleasure of hosting him on Go Plug Yourself. He sang the Canadian National Anthem at Go Plug Yourself 150 in front of a packed house at Mainline Theater back in 2018 and then went on to sing the National Anthem to over 20,000 people at the Bell Center this summer as part of Mike Ward’s “Sous écoute” podcast recording. 

Yeah, our podcast is basically as big as Mike Ward’s.

But we’re not here to plug Mike Ward’s podcast. No! We are here to tell you that Mike Paterson has gone to Hell!

9ES271: I Don’t Have To Make It For An Audience

Montreal’s best podcast reviews Clerks 3 and returns to our roots so this episode of 9ES is filmed entirely in grainy black and white film.

 

The original Clerks holds a very near and dear place in the heart of all 3 9ES podcaststers. I say with very little exaggeration that Clerks changed my perception of movies. Clerks came out in 1994 – I’m not sure when I first saw it but I’m guessing it was probably 1997. At that point I was about 14 years old and the concept of “independent film” was pretty foreign. Indie flicks were all (in my mind) artsy snooze fests.

 

Then this black and white movie came around about slackers talking about Star Wars.

 

I was a slacker.

 

I loved Star Wars.

 

Somehow, despite the fact that Kevin Smith has arguably lost his way as a filmmaker in the last 15-20 years, he manages to do right by Randall and Dante and give them a pretty heartfelt send-off in Clerks 3. It’s a fun flick.

 

We also talk about World War 1 Canadian flying aces.

While we did conquer our overall audio issues from last week we were not entirely without technical failures this week. Scott’s computer decided it needed to update itself right fucking now and the result is that we had a little less time than usual for Garbage Time.

Tranna Wintour Returns – GPYS 263

The Montreal podcast that asks comedian, singer, songwriter and Big Brother contestant Tranna Wintour: What scene in a movie makes you so emotional it brings you to tears? That question asked by Adam Reider back in episode 262.

Tranna Wintour is an amazing Montreal talent and it seems that every time you blink her star manages to soar even higher. Between co-hosting her podcast Chosen Family, performing in both English in French, releasing an album and nearly winning the second season of Big Brother Célébrités I think you would be hard pressed to find a harder working talent in the city.

If that wasn’t enough, she’ll be featured on the final episode of Comedy Night in Canada with Rick Mercer in November! Oh, and by the way, since we’re talking about Comedy Night in Canada this a pretty good time to tell you that our own Inés Anaya will also be featured on an episode airing on October 25th.

Like I say in the intro of this episode: I’m surrounded by amazing talented people and I just talk to them and make a podcast out of it.

Hey, things could be worse.

9ES270: We Fired The Sound Guy

Montreal’s best podcast has the worst sound quality!

 

Seriously, before we kick things off we would obviously like to take a moment to acknowledge the abysmal sound quality of this episode. What is this, 2012? Basically we lost some of the “good” sound files and are forced to present you with some mutant Frankenstein backup version of the recording.

 

The content is still there though. We have to believe in the content.

 

There is so much content.

 

The theme of the show this week is drama.

 

Drama about shipping people in planes from Texas to Massachusetts, drama about chess Grand Masters possibly getting chess tips over the air via remote controlled anal beads in their butt and drama about one of hip-hop’s highest selling artists getting into a beef with an internet music critic.

 

Also Queen Elizabeth II died. We speculate whether or not Canada should cut ties with the UK and Scott brings up the idea that as a Canadian citizen you can go to a British embassy when you’re traveling abroad as a fun perk.

 

According to VisaPlace Canada has about 145 embassies and 185 Consulates across the world. The UK has 162 embassies and 185 consulates and 33 “other representations”.

 

Not a bad perk to more than double the number of places you can go to if you are proper fucked in another country.

Adam Reider (Woodland Grey) Returns – GPYS 262

The Montreal podcast that asks indie filmmaker (and director of Woodland Grey) Adam Reider: “What do you ask for when your friend goes to Costco?” That question asked by Elspeth Wright and Raquel Maestre in episode 261.

 

It’s hard to believe that it was 5 years ago that we had Adam Reider on the show talking about Woodland Grey. He was so young, so optimistic, so ready to take on the world and make a movie.
Well, things don’t always turn out exactly the way we plan but at the end of the day Adam did make Woodland Grey, even if it wasn’t quite the film he imagined that it would be. We get deep into the many speedbumps, hurdles and barb wire fences that the production had to navigate. We dive into what happened vis a vis Bill Moseley, some less than pleasant financial issues, how the trailer was cut and more. This episode just might be the precursor to Adam touring the country to do Q&A’s about overcoming the odds in the face of making a first feature film.
Reminder of course to check out Woodland Grey on whatever streaming platform you can find it on (right now it’s on iTunes, Google, YouTube etc but only in Canada) but maybe even more importantly stay tuned to where you can actually get to see it on the big screen. If you live in Montreal you can do that THIS WEEKEND. That’s right, Adam’s film Woodland Grey will be screening this Saturday, September 17th as part of Montreal’s Requiem Fear Festival at Hotel Ruby Foo’s (7655 Decarie Blvd, Montreal, Quebec).
Oh, and on the off chance you live in New Jersey, Woodland Grey will be screening as part of the Smodcastle Film Festival! Whaaaaat.

We kick this episode off by talking about the CFO of Bed Bath and Beyond throwing himself out of a window to his death and the resulting ripples of armchair investors trying to recreate the magic of GameStop and navigate just what that suicide might mean for the stonk.

We then move on to what’s really on people’s minds right now: The Netflix adaptation of Sandman.

 

Now listen, I enjoy most of Neil Gaiman’s work. But I never really got heavily invested into Sandman. My old roommate had most of them so I occasionally read an issue or trade here and there but it never really clicked for me. And while I can recognize its place as an important fixture in the increased popularity of “alternative” comics I’m still not sold on it’s overall quality.

 

That said, the show is pretty enjoyable.

 

A part of me is watching it to do my small part to let Netflix know that they should continue to take risky projects and I hope Sandman gets a second season and somehow it also means that Cowboy Bebop comes back too.

 

This week’s episode of Garbage Time is yet another ultra special garbage spectacular! We apply our scientifically and peer tested list-making methodology to the Saturday Night Live films and rank them from best to worst. Spoiler-alert: they are mostly all the worst. We spend a lot of time trying to determine if Coneheads is funny and whether or not Blues Brothers deserves to be so well regarded.
