GPYS 342: Dawn McSweeney

The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks Dawn McSweeney: “What is the one place you recommend to someone you hate?” That question was asked by Sam Félix back in episode 341.

I joke during this episode that Dawn McSweeney is joining Walter J. Lyng, Troy Stark and I to do a victory lap following this year’s amazing edition of the World’s Smallest Comedy Festival but the truth is the great producers of this town never rest on their laurels. Troy and Dawn are teaming up to co-host “Dumpster Fire” on September 25th at Cafe Cleopatra, a comedy show dedicated to the trash, the wild cards, the unhinged stories, and the lovable dirtbags who make life interesting, headlined by Go Plug Yourself’s very own Chris Venditto. Dawn joins the Go Plug Yourself crew to talk about Iron Maiden, reality television and so much more. Sit back, relax, head out to Dumpster Fire on September 25th and enjoy the show.

Walter J. Lyng is a stand-up comedian based out of Montreal, you should follow him on Twitter @wallygoodtimes and on Facebook: Walter J. Lyng

Troy Stark is yet another amazing Montreal comedian and promoter who indulges me in co-hosting this wonderful little show of ours. You can catch him pretty often at the World’s Smallest Comedy Night and Cheap Laughs at Rustik Pub, both of which he produces.

The Montreal arts and entertainment podcast that asks Sloan Kooshan & Dawn McSweeney: Where would you travel next? And: What’s the most definitive art piece that you enjoy? Those questions asked by Daniel Glick and Evelyne Côté in our Osheaga Special Episode.

On this week’s episode Sarah and I are talking to Sloan Kooshan and Dawn McSweeney about the upcoming SWANA Comedy Show at La Poubelle Magnifique on August 25th at 8 pm. This edition of the SWANA Comedy Show is more than just comedy—it’s a fundraiser for Palestine. All proceeds will go towards The Ghassan Abu Sittah Children’s Fund, an organization dedicated to providing critical medical attention to the children of Gaza. For more information on the fund or to make a donation there directly head to https://gabusittahchildrensfund.org or better yet come out to the show and make a donation in person!  This edition of the SWANA Comedy Show is produced as part of Forget the Box’s “Your Show Here” community initiative.

We talk to Sloan about his origin as comedian, the differences between audiences here and in Europe, finding your audience, the difficulties of being a “good” political comedian and much, much more! It’s also our first round of the NEW questions in our 5 Questions Segment! How did we come up with these new questions? Well you should probably go back and listen to Episode 300 if you haven’t already.

For more information about the SWANA Comedy Show check out the Facebook Event.

Forget the Box (Andrew Jamieson & Dawn McSweeney) – GPYS 280

by on July 6, 2023 at 6:56 pm
Posted In: Go Plug Yourself, Podcast, Podcasting

The Montreal podcast that asks Andrew Jamieson & Dawn McSweeney of Forget The Box: What is the weirdest porn you’ve gotten off to? That question asked by Vinny Terzo (Horns & Hoofs) back in episode 279 (sorry dad).

If you’ve been following the arts and entertainment “underground” scene of Montreal over the course of the last 15-20 years the name ‘Forget the Box’ almost certainly rings a bell at the very least. Maybe you’re intimately familiar or maybe you’ve just heard the name in passing.

Forget the Box was a mainstay blog of the scene – covering the likes of theater, music, comedy and more. Unfortunately certain blogs that I have no problem calling out like MTLBlog squashed a lot of great local content by carpet bombing social media with their bullshit and Forget the Box was very nearly a casualty.

But then Andrew Jamieson stepped in with the defibrillator and resuscitated Forget the Box and it’s back baby! It’s new home is ForgetTheBox.ca and Dawn and Andrew are hellbent on making it an important part of the Montreal arts scene once again. We talk about how they’re doing thing differently, the type of journalism you can expect at Forget the Box, movies, music and a bunch of other stuff I’m forgetting. It’s that free wheeling Go Plug Yourself magic.

Sit back and enjoy the show!
