The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks Montreal writer, broadcaster and political commentator Dave Kaufman: What is the one live performance that you would willingly see every time you went out over and over again? That question was asked by Sarah Warren in our last episode which you should also totally check out.

A couple of weeks ago we shared an episode from a few years ago that we did with Dave Kaufman – Dave’s a political expert and has recently been turning his attention to writing about politics with a few recent articles over at The Progressive Magazine. In case you haven’t noticed – it’s kind of a spicy time politically these days with the Trump presidency down South and the Canadian election just a few weeks away. So it was high time that we had Dave Kaufman back on the show proper.

It’s not all doom and gloom – we talk about music, baseball and if we’re being totally honest – quite a bit of doom and gloom. The rise of fascism kind of does that, doesn’t it? We hope you enjoy the show anyways and hopefully it provides a little clarity of what’s going in the world. It was cathartic for Chris and I at least.

So this week our intended guest AND our co-host were feeling under the weather so as we do we are digging into our archives to share one of our favorite episodes – we’re going back to November 2020 to our episode that we recorded with Dave Kaufman – 2020 seems almost quaint these days doesn’t it? We spent the episode talking about the political landscape at the time and the Tragically Hip, man – we should get Dave back on the show to make sense of everything going on right now shouldn’t we? Anyways – we’ll be back in two weeks with a brand new guest to get back to our regularly scheduled programming. Go Plug Yourself!

We know just what you wanted this week.

You wanted an extra long episode of Go Plug Yourself to take your mind off of the craziness of politics. Well, we half delivered. This is an extra long episode of the show but it is almost exclusively about politics, that said, it all wraps up with one of the all-time great 5 Question segments we’ve ever had.

Dave Kaufman is our guest this week who was gracious enough to come on the show to talk about the American election, American politics and a little bit about the Tragically Hip.

Jared Wilder – GPYS 307

The Montreal podcast that asks New York comedian Jared Wilder: “Which of your friend’s parents did you want to hook up with?” returns for another chaotic freewheeling round of podcasting gold. That question asked of course by none other than the Hardcore Hero – The Green Phantom back in episode 306 (the views and opinions of The Green Phantom do not represent those of this podcast or its hosts).

So breaking slightly from tradition I must first admit that Jared Wilder is not from Montreal. However, he co-hosts a football show over on YouTube called “In the Trenches” with our very own Chris Venditto so we’re going to consider him an honorary Montrealer for the purposes of this show.

Jared Wilder has been all over the place in New York City and Los Angeles, performing with The Groundlings and Second City and having studied and performed at some of New York’s finest acting schools. *cough cough Stella Adler cough cough*

Obviously with a classy guest like that we spend a bunch of time talking about pro-wrestling and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. That’s how we roll!

Don’t call it a comeback! Loyal Go Plug Yourself listeners have noted that we haven’t had Chris Venditto on the show in a couple of months. He’s been on our Long Term Injured Reserve list for the last few months while he took care of a few things but guess what?

In all seriousness it was extremely special for me to be able to have Chris back with us at the back of Grumpy’s and I thought we should celebrate his return by not having a “usual” guest and instead getting Walter J. Lyng and Troy Stark to come out and just have a free-form roundtable discussion about whatever nonsense happens to come to mind.

GPYS – It’s a Cowboy Summer

Every now and then Chris Venditto and I like to take an episode to catch up and talk mostly about the Montreal Canadiens and wrestling. What a better way to kick off Cowboy Summer than talking about hockey?

Well this episode is that but also includes us branching out into talking about the Montreal PWHL team and Chris shares his thoughts on the absence of the Just for Laughs festival this summer in Montreal now that we’re nearly two months removed from the news and he has had a little more time to ruminate.

Chris has declared the summer of 2024 to be “Cowboy Summer” (I may be paraphrasing) but when Beyoncé has released a country album and apparently everyone is listening to “A Bar Song” by Shaboozey it’s hard to deny that he might be on to something.

I actually wonder if country music festivals will do better this year than the “normal” music festivals.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

The Go Plug Yourself Where We Talk About Wrestling (Again)

Sometimes even the best laid plans don’t come to fruition.

Our plan this week was to reunite my cohosts Inés Anaya, Chris Venditto and Lawrence Corber so that we could have a roundtable catchup discussion and come up with a few new questions for our “5 Questions” segment. The plan even involved Lawrence taking the train from Missassauga into Toronto (armed with a USB microphone that I lent him over the weekend) to go to Inés’ house for better sound quality. It was a perfect plan spanning two provinces.

Alas – it was not meant to be. Due to a vetrinary medical emergency we had to scramble for a backup plan. Lawrence could only record from his phone (which is why he sounds like he is recording from a phone) and we were missing a co-host. So we did what we always do: talk about wrestling.

A lot has happened in wrestling over the last few weeks (do not look up why Vince McMahon is a bad man and just trust me that he is) but we decide to focus on actual in-ring discussions. If you want our hot-takes on the Vince McMahon allegations we will set up a very expense Patreon paywall because we don’t want to talk about it (but obviously will if you pay us a bunch of money, let’s not kid ourselves).

The Montreal podcast that asks comedian Dan Kestler-D’Amours: “How did you get into what you’re doing?” That question asked in episode 290 by Rob from Montreal Pinball Arcade.

So every now and then my co-host Chris Venditto likes to sneak a full on sports episode into the rotation. This is not quite that, but it’s close. Yes Dan Kestler-D’Amours is a talented Montreal comedian but, to quote Chris: “This guy has some great football takes.”

So this is serving as much as a Superbowl preview episode as it is a regular episode of Go Plug Yourself. Deal with it. Dan and Chris also go through the remaining NFL Playoff matchups and give their picks to win it all at the Superbowl so if you’re a gambling person maybe this is also a sports betting podcast now? I hear there’s money in that. Someone get BETMGM on the phone it’s time to monetize this biz.

The Montreal arts and entertainment podcast that asks comedian Serag Meletian: What is the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you? That question asked by our guest Éloïse Marseille back in episode 289.

Incredibly it has been exactly one year since we’ve had Serag Meletian on the show to the day and it’s a testament to the greatness of this show that we get to have guys like him as pretty much recurring guests (stay tuned for the first week of December 2024 when we will have him back on the show). He’s one of Montreal’s most talented comedians regardless of whether or not he’s working face or heel.

We talk about wrestling, being a wrestling fan, embarrassing stories and comic books. You can hear Venditto’s eyes glass over when we get into the comic book talk but I don’t care man it’s the best. The Montreal podcast that asks comedian Elie Gill: What is your ideal sandwich? That question asked back in episode 273 by the hot dog loving Amanda McQueen (we also ask the insane secondary question: What tattoo would you let Keith give you?)

Elie Gill is a Montreal comedian and independent journalist who just got back from London to do this show.

That’s right, we flew her in from London just so she could come to the back of Grumpy’s and record this podcast.

Listen, this episode gets pretty deep into cultural politics, the rise of right-wing Nationalism and how maybe narrow-minded assholes are ruining the whole world for the rest of us.

But we also talk about sandwiches!

Perhaps most importantly, she is producing her first show “The Empress Comedy Show” as part of the inaugural Gigglefest Montreal. The show will feature an All-Asian, all-star lineup of talented women: Yumi Blake, Andrina Learmonth, Diana Reyes, Joanna Selvarajah, Mariam Khan and Kayla de Leon. Elie Gill will be hosting the whole thing April 8th at Lord William Pub at 8 pm. Get your tickets now you so and so.
