The Ignorant Beer Review: Chronique

Brewer: Le Trèfle Noir

Red Ale, 4.8%

Bought it because we just got these and a few others from this brewery, and the labels are just so pretty, and I haven`t had a proper red in a while.

It`s got a nice, deep rusty red color. The bit of foam there was dissipated fairly quickly, and it was a nice frothy beige.

It smells nice. Not too strong, I think I`m picking up a sweet nutty scent. Super subtle.

Okay. Not at all what I was expecting it to taste like. It`s scent sort of reminded me of Newcastle Brown Ale, so I was kind of hoping it would be similar with a more interesting twist, but this essentially tastes like a diluted version. Almost watered down.

I`ve been very spoiled with these rich and powerful beers lately, maybe I`m just not used to lights reds anymore.

It`s bitter, but not in a fun way, and I can`t really detect any flavours underneath that. So yeah, a bit hoppy, and doesn`t deliver the “caramel aroma and subtle nutty taste” that the label advertises. And it`s low percentage, so I can`t even drown my disappointment into a numb happy buzz.

This is a miss for me, but if you enjoy very light red ales, then this is for you. Pretty refreshing, all things considered, and if you`re not looking for anything too complicated.

EDIT: I gave it to my boyfriend, and he loved it. Feh.

The Ignorant Beer Review: La Vache Folle ESB

Beer: Extra Special Bitter

Brewer: Microbrasserie Charlevoix

Strong red ale, bitter, 6%

Bought it because after mentioning my blog to a few customers at the shop, it was recommended to me several times. And I`ve never had a bitter so…

Right. I`m a bit apprehensive, I`m not usually fond of bitter things. But I`ve committed so here goes.

This is a pretty sort of apricot colour, so I am confused. Looks nice and clear. Inviting, even. I sense deception.

It doesn`t smell bitter. I`m really not sure what to expect at this point. It smells fresh and pleasant. Maybe floral. And slightly sweet.

Oh wow. I don`t know how to process this taste. Oh fuck, I think this is too complex for my ignorant taste buds. This tastes like everything I just mentioned, and then there`s a kick in the face bitterness that crashes through and lingers on. Holy shit I think I like it. Yeah, I think I do! It`s really different, I was hoping I`d discover something new, oh yay!

Shit I would drink this with every burger. I approve!

And I take it back, the first sip was pretty bitter, sure, but after that it really balances out. I`m a fan. And it`s pretty cheap.

The Ignorant Beer Review: MacKroken

Brewer: Le Bilboquet

Scotch Ale brewed with honey, 10.8%

Bought it because honey and scotch ale. Duh.

This is a deep burned caramel colour, but clear! And red undertones. There`s hardly any foam and what`s there dissipates pretty quickly.

Oooooh it smells like fresh honey and something like prunes a bit. Promises of sweet, sweet goodness.

The brewery`s website says it compliments salty cheeses very well, and I happened to have an aged espresso cheddar so… don`t I feel fancy? Oh my, this is indeed quite honeyed. But also bitter? It`s a weird mix but I like it. Very smooth and thick. The aftertaste has a bit of an alcohol-ish bite.

I like it! It definitely does go well with the cheese I have here, though I honestly couldn`t tell you if it enhances anything.

This is sweet, bold, and strong! Get it!

The Ignorant Beer Review: Péché Mortel

Brewer: Brasserie Dieu du Ciel

Extra strong stout, brewed with coffee, 9.5%

Bought it because I was going to a chalet for the weekend and all my boyfriend likes to drink is pale ales. I was like F that. Also, brewed with coffee.

I was pouring this and noticed a slight redness when the light shone through, but in my glass it is hardcore opaque espresso brown, with a thick, creamy coffee coloured foam.

This totally smells like fresh ground coffee beans. This smells so rich and like it might be slightly bitter. Omg I want cake flavoured with how this beer smells.

Oh…. wow. Yeah I`m definitely a stout girl. This tastes like rich and smooth coffee, followed by a bitter sweetness. This is just indecent holy crap. It`s a little malty, but I like it. It`s not overpowering. I`m so glad I bought a 4 pack.

In short, very pronounced flavours. Persistent taste, thick and intense. I definitely recommend this for coffee and stout enthusiasts.

The Ignorant Beer Review: Sein d`esprit, bière fumée

Wheat beer, smoked, 5% (Rauchweizen)

Bought it because I remember trying a smoked beer many moons ago, Cheval Blanc, and I liked it quite a bit.

This is an opaque, peachy yellow beer. Nice creamy looking white foam too.

Oooooh smells like smoke. Like clothes the day after you spent the night in the campfire smoke. This smells so nostalgic to me hahaha!

Super refreshing when you first take a sip, and the smokey flavour creeps in after a couple of seconds.Slight bitterness follows that through, but is then chased off by a surprising yet gentle sweetness.

The label mentions banana and cloves aroma, with notes of vanilla. I can`t really pin point these flavours but I can say that it turns into a magical dance of omg I need more. The aftertaste retains no bitterness for me, I fucking love this. New favourite beer! YEAH!

If you like smokey beers but eventually get saturated by how strong the taste comes across, this is a great alternative.

The Ignorant Beer Review: Citra Weisse

It is tiiiime for the fourth edition of this nonsense!

This week I have selected a beer that has zero appeal to me, purely for variety`s sake. The name of the brewery is less than appetizing to me, and their best seller is, as far as I can tell, their IPA. Double bleh. Let`s see how this goes!

Beer: Citra Weisse

Brewer: Microbrasserie Le Castor

Wheat beer, 5%, and organic. Ooooooh.

Bought it because I want to expand my horizons.

This is my dog Bubbles. I thought she`d make the photo more interesting.

The colour is super pale. It looks like bleached atomic gold. Or, you know, lemonade if you prefer realistic comparisons.

It smells super citrussy and also a bit hoppy. The scent is making me suspicious… it smells way to refreshing for what I expect it to taste like.

Arg. Ok yeah I really don`t like white beers. This has all the sour lemony faces you can cram into one sip. The label says it has aromas of banana, clove and bubblegum. I call bullshit. Although I do have a ridiculously almost not there aftertaste of banana, but not like the fruit. I mean like those 0.35$ popcycles you get at the dep banana. The hoppy taste is just too overwhelming for me to notice anything beyond that.

I don`t like it 🙁 I hate doing negative reviews, I feel all dirty. I almost feel like picking up a different one tonight, just so I can do a nice one to wash away the bad.

BAH!

If you`re into hoppy, citrussy white beers, I guess you might like this?

The Ignorant Beer Review: Malédiction

I`m late for posting! I meant to bring this home Thursday night after work but I forgot 🙁 Better late then never: Chug a beer and get to work!

Beer: Malédiction

Brewer: Microbrasserie Le Saint-Bock

Milk Stout, 5%

Bought it because I wanted to review a darker beer for my third review, and I like stouts.

Yes, that is a Max Headroom desktop wallpaper, and yes, I am aware there are too many icons on my desktop. I was doing costume research and haven`t sorted the photos into folders yet.

Back to the beer. It is the darkest, richest chocolate brown colour. Even the foam is brown. Crazy opaque, I for real cannot see through it when help up against a light. It poured out all creamy and think looking too!

It smells god damned fantastic, like bitter cocoa and burned coffee. The label says it`s got notes of vanilla in it, but my stupid nose can`t pick it up.

OMG it tastes like all of that times ten. I think the vanilla is lost on me though. It boasts a sweet vanilla finish… I had my boyfriend try it to see if I was just defective in the taste buds, but he says he can`t taste it either.

Wait no. I just tried it again, and I do taste it right before the bitterness takes over. Don`t get me wrong though, it`s not too bitter a stout, but it definitely takes over the taste after a second or two. Yeeaahhh this is so tasty! It`s nice and fizzy too, softly carbonated but noticeable.

Average price for size and percentage.

If you`re into flavourful Milk Stouts, and don`t mind them in the summer, go for it. I love this beer. I wish I`d brought home more than one 🙁
