Brewer: Trèfle Noir

Smoked Rye Porter, 6.5%

I think, by now, that is if you’ve been reading my reviews regularly, you know why I bought this beer. I love porters, I love smoked beers, and most of all, I love Trèfle Noir microbrewery. So. Hard.

 

 

I’m nervous. I don’t know why hahah! It’ like every time I try a new beer of theirs, I’m afraid I will hate it for some reason, and it will shatter the pedestal I have put them on.

Ok here goes then.

It’s an opaque espresso brown. But like, not completely opaque. It has a secret and it’s teasing me. I poured it out so carefully, and it made zero foam. There’s a tiny bit of froth around the rim, but hardly at all.

Arrrrg ok it smells amazing. Actually it kind of smells like the stout cupcakes I had earlier today… a little bit sweet. And toasty. Like slightly burned toast. Ah yeah ok the label describes the rye as being sweet and spicy, and there is a good amount of toasted bread notes.

Oh and what. The smoke they added is bacon smoke?! Not sure about that. I guess we’ll see.

Well shit. I have a new favourite beer. Well… until they brew Ale-O-Ween again, that is. Which I am officially out of, as of last month. But yes. This is amazing.

I don’t understand. The flavours are dancing on the tip of my tongue and hugging the rest of my mouth. I’m gonna try to break this down but dont’ expect too much of me here. I think the rye is making the flavour stay nice and light, despite the reasonable amount of hops they have included in the brew. It’s definitely not something I would call sweet, it’s more like… the promise of sweet? Omg you know I love a beer when I get poetic.

“Sweetness promised within

With bitterness overall thin

Smoke covers my senses

And it lowered my defenses”

But yeah I can’t taste the bacon in the smoke. I’m loving the subtle smokiness.  It’s not overpowering. And given the fact that it’s a porter, I was expecting a bit of a kick in the face. But no. surprisingly light and refreshing.

I definitely recommend this. It’s fucking fantastic. Not too strong either, provided you’re not chugging on an empty stomach. 6.5% is a comfortable zone.

The Ignorant Beer Review: O’Born Evil

Brewer: Le Trèfle Noir

Scotch Ale, 8.7%

Bought it because, well, I do love my Scotch Ales, and I love this brewery, so how could I not. I was gonna do only Christmas beers for December, but… I am a slave to my heart.

 

 

This is a beautiful near-opaque rusty brown. Tiny bit of beige foam poured out on top of it and dissipated almost entirely after a few minutes.

This smells different for a Scotch Ale. I normally expect them to immediately release this bouquet of thick sweet honey, but this is more subtle. And a tiny bit fruity.

Ah okay, the label says plum and candied fruits hahah there you go. Also mentions malt and toffee. Let`s have a taste then.

Holy shit that is nice. This has a nice thick bitterness I associate with a stout almost, swirled together with the Scotch sweetness. The bitterness lingers in the aftertaste, so you`re not overwhelmed with only sweet notes. Interesting mix. Now I wish I had some nice aged cheddar to nibble on while I drink this hahaha! Definitely a sipping beer though.

It`s got quite a kick, as most Wee Heavy ales do, sitting at 8.7%.

I Love it! Much like a Scotsman, it is sweet but deep down all dark and bitter 😀

Stout, 5.8%

Bought it because I`m currently having a torrid love affair with this brewery, and as always, I love stouts.

 

 

This is the colour of like, you know when you make a pot of coffee, have a cup, and then leave the pot on the burner for like half a day and it gets super dark? It`s like that. So opaque. Much dark. It has a fine layer of cream coloured foam once poured, which lingers.

It smells like all the good comforting things I love. Sweet yet bitter coffee aroma, something toasted, just yum. Very fragrant.

Ooooh first sip is fairly hoppy, but balanced off nicely by the other flavours. I like the bitterness as it`s not overpowering. The coffee is very evident in every sip, as well as a slightly burnt toast in the background. A brief flash of dark chocolate shows up in the aftertaste.

Very little carbonation, as a good stout should have, I`d definitely call this a success. I am definitely putting this in my “comfort food & drinks” list. So nice. Much good.

Very affordable, as most this brewery`s beers are.

A bit light as far as stouts go, at 5.8%. Hey, that only means you get to have more!

The Ignorant Beer Review: Ale-O-Ween

Brewer: Le Trèfle Noir

Strong Pumpkin Ale, 7.8%

Bought it because I tend to love pumpkin beers, and I`m looking forward to trying more than the ONE we see everywhere this time of year. Also omg the label is so cute. And `TIS THE SEASON MUTHA FUCKAAAHHHHH!

 

 

This is the bright and bold colour of a rusty sunset. Fierce orange pierced with a fiery red tint, and it`s very clear. It`s got a creamy looking foam, dissipates lightly after a few minutes.

My goodness it smells amazing. It smells like everything pumpkin should smell like. It doesn`t seem to be overly spiced, which I think I`ll appreciate. I`m not into nutmeg. Or cloves.

Oh woooow that is smooth and creamy. This is so delicious. Hardly any bitterness, not really sweet, this is a perfect in-between. You can definitely taste the pumpkin, and slight spices. I`m glad they taste as subtle as they smelled. The aftertaste leaves you with a lingering ghost of pumpkins past.  Very soft.

This is so good. I`m furious, the shop was only able to get it`s hands on one box of 12 bottles. I wanted a whole case to myself! RAAAAGE!

This beer is pretty strong, so drink responsibly. Also, damned cheap for the punch it packs.

The Ignorant Beer Review: Chronique

Beer: Chronique

Brewer: Le Trèfle Noir

Red Ale, 4.8%

Bought it because we just got these and a few others from this brewery, and the labels are just so pretty, and I haven`t had a proper red in a while.

 

It`s got a nice, deep rusty red color. The bit of foam there was dissipated fairly quickly, and it was a nice frothy beige.

It smells nice. Not too strong, I think I`m picking up a sweet nutty scent. Super subtle.

Okay. Not at all what I was expecting it to taste like. It`s scent sort of reminded me of Newcastle Brown Ale, so I was kind of hoping it would be similar with a more interesting twist, but this essentially tastes like a diluted version. Almost watered down.

I`ve been very spoiled with these rich and powerful beers lately, maybe I`m just not used to lights reds anymore.

It`s bitter, but not in a fun way, and I can`t really detect any flavours underneath that. So yeah, a bit hoppy, and doesn`t deliver the “caramel aroma and subtle nutty taste” that the label advertises. And it`s low percentage, so I can`t even drown my disappointment into a numb happy buzz.

This is a miss for me, but if you enjoy very light red ales, then this is for you. Pretty refreshing, all things considered, and if you`re not looking for anything too complicated.

EDIT: I gave it to my boyfriend, and he loved it. Feh.
