Mainline Rocky Horror (Kenny Streule & Cat Preston) – GPYS 286

The Montreal podcast that asks Cat Preston and Kenny Streule (from Mainline Presents Richard O’Briens The Rocky Horror Show): “What’s the worst you’ve ever had to hold it? How did it end?” That thought provoking question provided by Andrina Learmonth back in episode 285.

We’ve had various stars of various versions of Rocky Horror on the show over the years which is a true testament to the staying power of what is openly one of the most bizarre little slices of pop-culture that there is.

As we talk about in the show, if you pitched Rocky Horror to almost anyone you would probably be laughed out of whatever room you were in. It sounds like an overly ambitious fever dream that would be lucky to find even the smallest of cult audiences. And yet, 50 years after it debuted on stage The Rocky Horror show is still delighting audiences with both its film and stage versions.

So much so that even with an incredible 8 dates – the Mainline production of Rocky Horror is very nearly sold out already! As Kenny says in the episode though there is a small chance that more tickets might be made available. Your best bet is probably to stay tuned to Mainline’s Facebook and the social media platform formerly known as Twitter if you want to get the jump on any last minute ticket availabilities!

Jordan Robson-Cramer (Phonopolis) & Jason Grimmer – GPYS 201

The Montreal podcast that asks Jordan Robson-Cramer (Phonopolis) & Jason Grimmer (Commotion Theater): “How would you define success?” (Asked by Sergio da Silva back in episode 199).

To kick things off in the “post-Walter era” (which I think is kind of our Attitude Era, which makes this our Ruthless Aggression Era) we have not one, but two guests for you: Jordan Robson-Cramer and Jason Grimmer!

Jordan is the co-owner of one of Montreal’s historic record stores Phonopolis and Jason Grimmer is on the forefront of our city’s cutting edge improv scene.

You may have heard that Phonopolis (among other record stores) is currently finding themselves in a very absurd situation where they are staring down a $2,900 fine for staying open late last year during Record Store Day. While Mayor Valérie Plante has said the city will be extending weekend hours for record stores, Phonopolis and the other businesses involved are still trying to get the fines dropped altogether.

Towards the end of this episode, Jordan asks our listeners to continue to shop at local record stores and to consider putting your out of town friends up in your home instead of AirBnBs.

Meanwhile, Jason Grimmer (who works part time at a record store as well, in his case Cheap Thrills) has recently started hosting monthly improv shows over at Mainline Theater under the banner of “Commotion Theater” and his ongoing series “Night Drive” continues next Saturday, Feb 29 at Le P’tit Impro.

Stepping in for the co-hosting duties on this episode is Lawrence Corber, who is a very busy man who you should probably follow on Facebook.

Montreal’s most talented talk-show band leader, Leighland Beckman, returns to the airwaves of Go Plug Yourself. But in many ways, he is always with us. Or at least, he’s with us most of the time. Leighland and Aural Turpitude provide our theme song you see. Leighland brings his brand of musical comedy to not one, but two live talk shows in Montreal. Walter J. Lyng’s own “Night Fight” and “Life Lessons” with Keith Waterfield. Both of which have dates coming up in December! We also talk about life in the 80s in Kingston, Ontario. MC Quarter Pounder 4 Life.

JFL – Jen Kirkman Is Not Going To Have Kids

And it’s ok. Even better, that just means that she has more time to be funny for us.

When I told my wife I was going to be talking to Jen Kirkman she (as she does) needed a point of reference for who I was talking about. That part was easy, Jen’s repeat appearances on “Drunk History” are among the best the show has to offer. A quick scan of some of her earlier work revealed that Kirkman was part of stuff that I was into from much, much further back than that. She voices Nurse Kirkman and Cynthia in Home Movies in the early 2000s (of which I own the whole series) and was also featured prominently in Acceptable TV, Dan Harmon’s Channel 101 inspired show on VH1.

She’s been a part of comedy that I was into for the last 15 years at least, so why did it take until 2009 for her to be named one of the Rising Stars of Comedy by Entertainment Weekly?

Search me.

Jen is coming to town next week for 5 shows at Montreal’s Mainline Theater for her show “Irrational Thoughts” as part of Montreal’s Just for Laughs festival. She promises a mix of new and old material, some of which will be brand new for the Montreal audience.

Go Plug Yourself 69: Amy Blackmore

So Walter and Amy Blackmore have a rather tricky history. If you’ve attended any of the Night Fight’s (or subsequent Brunch Fights) you know that for some reason, Walter is under the belief that Amy Blackmore is trying to “keep him down”. I’m not entirely sure where he got that idea from, but in effort to try to smooth out relations between himself and Amy he managed to convince her to sit down and talk with us for an hour. Amy was a great host, letting us into her office at the back (middle?) of Mainline Theater on the Main. Amy talks about romance, dance and upcoming shows at the Mainline. Well, it took us nearly two years for us to finally get around to having Shane join the canon episodes but by jove we did it. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the fuck was up with my mic so I sound like shit.
