It is time for another installment of “Pictures of Kanye, Words of Noam”, where we look at pictures of Kanye West and read the words of Noam Chomsky. Because it’s Friday. The end of the work week. Yep.

I started writing this post on Wednesday, which would have marked the 100th day that since the site was “switched on”, so yeah, the timing could’ve been a little better, but you know what? Fuck the timing. Anyhow, here’s the facts:
On October 24th 2011 Danny contributed this review of the film Martyrs. That was our 100th post. That was a few weeks ago, our total post count is now 123. This will be the 124th post on the site. BOOM! (There’s a little bit of cheating in that count I realized, since 10 of my posts were actually just dumped in from my previous blog, so, strictly speaking our 100th post in this format was probably about 2 weeks ago, not 3, whatever).
Wednesday November 9th 2011 was our 100th day of operation as a site. In that time we’ve never missed one of our Monday to Friday commitments (Fuck Mondays, 9to5 (illustrated), WTF World and Fine Arts). Not bad eh? I thought so too. With the current run of 9to5 (illustrated) coming to an end yesterday and venturing forward to a new, much more collaborative thought out comic and all those “100s” floating around, I decided to post a little tribute to myself the fine people I work with and some of what we’ve accomplished. Without further delay here’s my personal favorites from the 9to5 (dot cc) world. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
Hey. Hi. How’s it going? Yes, it’s Friday, and as you well know, that means it is time for another installment of “Pictures of Kanye, Words of Noam”, where we look at pictures of Kanye West and read the words of Noam Chomsky.
Welcome back, my fearless friends. Yet again, it’s Friday, and as you well know, that means it is time for another installment of “Pictures of Kanye, Words of Noam”, where we look at pictures of Kanye West and read the words of Noam Chomsky.
Chomsky gave this quote in 2009, well before the appearance of the “Occupy” movement, practically predicting a social upheaval of some sort, even if he couldn’t exactly know what the upheaval would be.
Kanye West’s new album, “Watch The Throne” and co-MC’d by Jay-Z is not very good. I found it mostly to be poorly produced, meatless and unmemorable. Wikipedia states that as of November 2011, has sold 1,013,000 copies in the United States.
Look at this paragraph from the wiki (emphasis is mine):
Lyrical themes
The album features themes of opulence, fame, materialism, power, and the burdens of success.Jay-Z’s and West’s lyrics include boasts of obscene wealth, self aggrandisement, grandiosity, and social commentary. Sputnikmusic’s Tyler Fisher describes Watch the Throne as “an album centered around larger-than-life egos.” Andy Kellman of Allmusic characterizes much of the album’s lyrical content as “ruthless flaunting of material wealth and carte blanche industry resources.” Ross Green of Tiny Mix Tapes describes it as “luxury rap“, noting Jay-Z’s and West’s “whimsy and braggadocio.” Rob Harvilla of Spin views that their lyrics express elitism, narcissism, “relentless capitalism,” and “smug yet undeniable greatness.“
Certified platinum record. I just don’t know.

One day, I dream of having Kanye West read out these quotes, into the camera.

I love this quote by Chomsky. It was written in 1992 and accurately predicted the level of communal discourse and debate that is commonly know as “the internet”. There can be debate and polite disagreement on the internet, I’m fairly certain, even if I’ve yet to experience it first-hand.
Kanye West said, in the song “Swagga Like Us”:
Na-na-na
How it feel to wake up and be the shit and the urine?
Na-na-na-na-na
Trying to get that Kobe number, one over Jordan
I guess name calling, trolling, and eliciting a predictable torrent of abuse in response isn’t just limited to the internet.

Kanye West makes a pretty good living complaining about how he used to be poor, but even then, he was constantly spending his money on designer clothing. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…

We went from “Fight The Power” to “Swagga Like Us” in less than a generation.
