2/5ths of the seminal Montreal based horror rock punk (?) band FIGHTFACE join Walter and Keith to talk about how to become musicians, how to chop off your finger and how to handle hecklers. Dan plays the keys and Kate plays the bass and they’re joined by Elvis on vocals, Vince on guitar and Dustin on drums. They are FIGHTFACE/

This is basically a how-to guide for becoming a DIY artist in 2019.

Screaming Demons – GPYS 153

Montreal based punk rock & roll band Screaming Demons join us this week in a conversation about punk rock and horror movies. I’d love to say that we talk about other stuff, but really, when you put 4 guys in a room with a few beers who all love horror movies, that’s what you get.

’77 Montreal – The Pale Lips Ignore Negativity and Just Go For It

18121646_1787312808157927_3226895699996837260_o Full disclosure. I met Lynn Poulin from The Pale Lips a long time ago. Back when she was skating under the name “Lyn-Dah Kicks” as a member of Montreal Roller Derby (check out Scott’s piece on her here). Since then however she’s gone on to become the drummer of The Pale Lips!

The Pale Lips are bringing their love of classic old time rock n roll, punk rock and glam to kick things off at ’77 Montreal this Friday, July 28th at Parc Jean Drapeau.

I had the chance to ask a few questions to lead singer Jackie Blenkarn:

Keith: How did The Pale Lips get together? Did you guys always know you were going to be a “old time rock and roll/classic punk” band, or did that style develop after the fact?

Jackie: We really came into the band having an idea of what we wanted to sound like. Classic punk and rock and roll are common ground for all four of us. What makes our sound unique is the other individual influences that pepper their way into songs.

K: Montreal ’77 is a celebration of the explosion of punk that occured around the 1977 date. Several seminal punk bands had formed earlier, but it was 1977 that saw a string of releases from acts like Iggy Pop (his first solo album), The Clash, The Sex Pistols and The Ramones (who released both their second and third albums in ’77) that really forced punk into cultural significance. 40 years later, the genre is still going strong. ’77 Montreal – Genetic Control is a Page of Montreal Punk Rock History

mikeYou might think you’re hardcore. I mean, I don’t know you, you might even be hardcore. But do you know who is probably even more hardcore than you? The guys from Genetic Control.

Why? Well, when most of us get together in our teens with the general idea of “let’s start a hardcore band” we’re probably not going to still be in that same hardcore band coming up on 35 years later. But Genetic Control are still playing hardcore punk rock with the same lineup they had in 1983.

The same band that was opening for Dead Kennedys and Suicidal Tendencies in the 80’s will be opening for the likes of The Dropkick Murphys and Rancid on Friday, July 28th at ’77 Montreal.

Yeah, that’s pretty hardcore.

Mike Price (aka Zabo or Polio Elvis) answered a few question from 9to5 (dot cc) about what it is like being a page out of Montreal’s punk rock history book:

Keith: How did Genetic Control get together? Maybe more importantly, how did you get BACK together? Taking a 13 year break after only 3 years of being together seems rough.

Mike: Genetic Control was a genetic mutation that occurred when 2 incomplete local Montreal bands decided to combine forces. “Drunken Disturbance” was Rob Porter and Mike Brisbois, a guitar player and drummer and they were looking for a singer. “Out Of Step” was a singer (myself), a guitar player (Rob Huppé) and a bass player (Dougo Crevier) and we were looking to replace a recently departed drummer. We started jamming in winter 1983 and recorded our first record in spring of 1984 with yet another drummer and our final drummer Louis Leveque AKA Late Lewis and the ‘rest is history’ as they say. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…

’77 Montreal – Barrasso Has Mixed Feelings On Poutine

Barrasso’77 Montreal is a festival that is based around the history of punk rock. In many ways celebrating the unofficial “40th Anniversary” of the genre. With headliners like Rancid and The Dropkick Murphys having been around for years, and local acts like Genetic Control and The Kingpins heralding from the 80’s and 90’s you might think that the whole festival is just based on nostalgia.

You would be wrong.

There are a few new faces to the Montreal punk scene who will be representing what a “new”  punk band is all about: Barrasso. Barrasso released their first album in 2015, so compared to the likes of Madball they’re fresh on the scene. Also, they’re the only band that will be performing primarily in French (with honorable mention to The Kingpins who have a few French tracks).

I asked singer Jonathan Beauregard about what it’s like being a punk band in Montreal:

Keith: You’re a relatively new (from what I can see) as a punk bank, only being around for a few years. How did Barrasso get together?

Jonathan: I wish I had a cool story to tell about how we all met and formed the band. The truth is I barely knew these guys when I showed up to their practice space (at Cité 2000 back then).

I remember coming in the locker room for the first or second hockey game of the year for a team that I just joined. I didn’t know anybody really, I just wanted to play. It was the same with the band. So the first thing I saw was this bearded guy, wearing my old punk rock band’s t-shirt (Suck La Marde) and I said to myself; “Well, at least I’ll have this dude to talk to!” That was Frank, our drummer. Thierry was also playing with us. Once they knew who I was and the fact that my other band, The Dirty Tricks, was dead, they invited me to one their rehearsal with Etienne, to see if I would be interested in joining the band.

I was ready for a new start. New band, with new bandmates. But I didn’t know if they were good or if they sucked!

So I sat there in the couch, just wishing that they didn’t suck! And they didn’t. In fact they played these Hot Snakes type of riffs, down strokes, exactly the way I always did. I think it took 1 song and I was like, “I’m in!”

Louis came in later, when Thierry left for several months to travel the world. When Thierry got back, we didn’t know he was in town, and so he simply showed up to a rehearsal, without telling us. It was great to have him back and so now we have 3 guitars since then. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
