The Montreal podcast that takes a little bit longer to figure out when Tyrannosaurus Rex and Stegosaurus were alive than you might expect is back. Dinosaur facts!

At a certain point in this episode Scott posits that CM Punk is one of the most recognizable wrestlers currently actively wrestling. Listen, Keith owns 4 pieces of wrestling merch and 3 of them are CM Punk branded so you would think he would be ready to avidly agree, but he does not.

 

Let’s turn to Twitter to measure the global reach of currently active wrestlers even though, as we discuss in this episode, many of these followers might be fake. The Top 4 that we posit have global recognition of active wrestlers are: Ronda Rousey, Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns and CM Punk. Let’s see how many followers they have:

 

 

Brock is probably hurting since he hasn’t tweeted since 2020 but that’s still a pretty big case for Roman Reigns. A picture of him that he tweeted on April 30th holding the belts had 500 comments, 2000 retweets and 17,000 likes. Nobody else on that list gets close to those numbers.

 

Then again, he works for a company that his piped in cheers over stadium speakers to try to make it look like people were actually cheering for him a few years ago so maybe this entire exercise has been pointless.

 

I think it’s also worth noting that Ronda is an absolute abysmal follow on Twitter.

Scott continues to outdo himself with those cover images.  What a shame we never managed to get ITunes showing the mini versions he gets me every week.  True story they’re embedded somewhere in the bits of the audio file.  Somewhere.

We’re not kidding when we said that they’re an acquired taste.  Apparently they put on insane shows and keep up their stage personas 24*7 as some kind of next level performance art thing.  I don’t know how successful that all is but they sure made a hell of a weird music video.  It’s basically perfect.  Even if you don’t like the song and find the strobing starkly contrasted colors vaguely nauseating, which would not be surprising, you have to admin there is something compelling about it.  Something driving.  What’s a video there to do, other than to grab your attention and sell an album and get you spending braincycles on their content.  Mission accomplished Die Antwoord.  Mission accomplished.

And we’re back with another exciting 9ES.  Good pop on this one, sad news about Prince and Chyna and I feel like by the time I’ve written this the 3rd celebrideath will have occurred.  Or perhaps not, who ever believed in that anyway?

Probably everyone.

I feel like we had a good rhythm on this one.  Maybe it was the two double espressos I had on the way over or the king can of Monster I popped halfway through.  One of life’s mysteries.

Movie Review: Mortdecai

My wife and I went to see a pre-release of Mortdecai tonight. Directed by David Koepp (Premium Rush, Secret Window) and starring Johnny Depp, Gweneth Paltrow and Paul Bettany.

First admission; I had no idea what this movie was going to be about going into it. I had only seen the poster, and the poster is terrible.

That is a terrible poster.

Secondly; I am only occasionally fond of Johnny Depp. I find him too often guilty of hamming it up when a bit of restraint would make for a better movie, and I think that Tim Burton has ruined him in many a picture. If I had seen the trailer, I might have given my tickets away.

That is a terrible trailer.

 

The thing is, this movie was fun. Damn fun.

It had a bit of the hammy, foppish over acting of Depp right off the bat, but it settles down and takes his character on a good journey. I think it was a little part “The Brothers Bloom” and a little part “Snatch”, with a touch of Wes Anderson thrown in. These are all things that I quite like, and I quite liked Mortdecai.

The cast is pretty solid, each player performing well, with special notice to Paul Bettany’s Jock the man-servant. (Seriously, he’s most likely the best, most bad-ass man-servant I’ve ever seen in film.) The cinematography is good, and there’s enough action mixed in to not get too bogged down with some of the sillier moments. Depp does over-act at times, but he also delivers some of the best lines in the movie off-handedly, almost casually throwing them out there, and I chortled at a few of them that no one else in the theatre caught.

It has a British, 70’s kind of vibe about it, in no small part on it being based on a 70’s adventure novel, and I could see it as an old Michael Caine vehicle in all it’s grainy glory.

Punches, art, and probably too many vomit gags (pun intended) all sort of made for a fresh-feeling movie that’s better than it has any business being. I don’t care, really, and I’m gonna say it’s worth going out to see.

WTF World 11: Johnny Depp in “Dark Shadows” is a Day Walking Michael Jackson, Listeria in Cantaloupe and Nintendo’s 3DS Gets a Second Thumbstick

Annie are you ok?This is a shitty day for this column. I’m still wondering what I can do to spice this bitch up when I have days like today, where the entire world seems hellbent on being fascinated by garbage. What are people caring about right now you ask? There’s that trailer for that movie series about sparkling vampires that everyone seems to love so much that’s out. That’s a big deal to some. No, I’m not going to link to it and no, I haven’t watched the trailer in question. Apparently vampires are the talk of the (internet) town today though, as some photos leaked of Johnny Depp in the new Tim Burton film “Dark Shadows”. The popular consensus is of course that he looks like Michael Jackson in that makeup, but I’m more upset about something else. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
