The Montreal geek and pop culture podcast that isn’t quite done with Halloween yet talks about spooky stuff for another episode. You know, spooky stuff like the ongoing antitrust lawsuit against Google?

The Google antitrust stuff is interesting. Whenever Google (or Amazon… or Facebook… or Apple) get outed for doing sketchy shit I think most of us see it coming from a mile away. Oh, Google has been manipulating the entirety of advertising on the internet for years? Tell me something I don’t know. It’s kind of sad that it only really becomes newsworthy when someone tries to call them to task.

Jono does a pretty good job of breaking down exactly what Google was up to but this story is far from over.

We recorded this episode on November 1st which meant that most of our movie watching for the last two weeks was dominated by films for the so-called “Spooky Season”. From classics like The Thing and Psycho to new releases like Werewolf Within and Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin.

Also, kids should be allowed to run around screaming on Halloween. If 20,000 people are allowed to go to the Bell Center and scream at men on skates a few times a week then kids can get their scream on when they’re jacked up on candy. There, I said it.

Due to some technical difficulties on our part we weren’t able to record the normal episode of Garbage Time this week. Instead we re-posted a classic episode of “9to5 Movie Club” where we watched the film Naked Weapon. If you haven’t heard it yet, it’s great. Halloween movie watch: Hack O’Lantern (1988)

I’m usually not a fan of ”so bad it’s good” movies, but, wow…This was unexpected.

A total blind watch as I was settling in to eat my Halloween night pizza and brownies, this had me thoroughly entertained from beginning to end; mostly for the wrong reasons (i.e. it can’t under any kind of proper definition be qualified as ”good”), but without hesitation or shame.

Where was this movie during my formative years during the 80’s as I tried to watch every horror film in the video store?

Even for the late 80’s it already seems like it’s over-exagerating all the 80’s cliches, especially in the hair and wardrobe department. Most notable are: the lead protagonist/antagonist Tommy, who, in one glorious scene, is doing dumbbell curls shirtless in his basement WHILE WEARING A FUCKING BANDANA RAMBO-STYLE (I cheered-laughed to myself). And his…lady friend who appears in two scenes showing off an amazing, spiky pixie-type blonde punk haircut. And her naked body. Twice.

The acting is uniformly bad but in a logical(?) way, partly due to the dialogue. There is one incredible moment during Tommy’s first scene (as an adult) where he literally turns his head RIGHT AT THE CAMERA and leers menacingly in the most exagerated, over-the-top way that rivals the ”garbage day” moment in Silent Night, Deadly Night part 2 as far as iconically bad acting deliveries go. Except this one has no dialogue. I marveled.

Extra special acting mention goes to the *main* baddie, Tommy’s head-of-a-satanic-cult grandad, who appears to have been overdubbed in all his scenes. Amazing.

There is at least one very well-done kill (this is a slasher, BTW), but the FX are uneven with some of the blood splatter looking *exactly* like ketchup (complete with the orange-y color) while other moments being quite decent.

There is satan worship, a random dream sequence/music video, a surprising amount of gloriously-gratuitous nudity, scenes and characters that come and go with no rhyme or reason, butt branding, illogical reactions, plot holes, and it’s never boring.

I’m surprised this isn’t considered more of a cult classic of some kind. As I mentioned, I don’t enjoy bad movies, but sometimes one will hit all the right notes and deliver something special on a visceral level.

Alex Rose (CULT MTL) Returns! – GPYS 167

It’s well established that Alex Rose is a friend of the show. Not only has he been on GPYS proper 4 times now, he’s also featured on a bunch of our past Fantasia coverage. Why? Because he’s s a big shot over out at CULT Montreal when it comes to writing the words about the movies.  I feel like Alex has a pretty open ended invitation to be on the show whenever Walter wants to talk about movies. And, since it’s Halloween, we talk about horror movies. Alex has seen a bunch of movies (but not Suspira) that aren’t even out yet and we try to get him to talk about them. We also talk about Hereditary because it was great. Enjoy the show! Happy something something spooky. Consider this your 2018 Halloween Horror Movie Guide. Are you considering? You’d better be.

Fuck Mondays 14: Top 10 Halloween Costumes I’ve Seen on Reddit (2011)

It’s time for another, super phoned in edition of Fuck Mondays, Soph originally had this one but some shit came up (more poop references!) so I’m doing this one last minute.

This post is probably more for me than it is for you so I can show people these costumes later, but whatevs, if you haven’t seen these you’ll totally thank me. They’re in no particular order and I’ll admit that I slightly rewarded creativity in my choices more than “nailing it”, but nailing it still counted. There is no democracy here, only opinion. Every year there’s a million Jokers, Batmans, Rorshachs and Star Wars characters and some of them are awesome, but I prefer it when people think outside the box with their costumes.

10) Angelina Jolie’s (Drunk) Baby

This would probably be number 1 if this list had an order. Combining creativity and “nailing it” together into a kickass fucking costume.
