CULT PLAY w/ Scout Rexe & Annie Valentina – GPYS 322

The Montreal podcast that asks playwright Scout Rexe and director Annie Valentina from CULT PLAY: What is the biggest hurdle in your creative process? That question asked back in episode 321 by Lucie Gee and Costs Tsimiklis from Le Grand Yes And festival.

CULT PLAY from Imago Theatre is having its world premiere at the Segal Center next week (tickets and showtimes here) and honestly it sounds like an incredible production. Playwright Scout Rexe (or Sax as their friends call them) got sucked into cult documentaries during the pandemic and began to wonder what it would take for them to be sucked into a cult. That thought process lead to the creation of CULT PLAY which Annie Valentina brings to life on stage.

Alex meets a captivating woman who is everything she’s ever wanted. Taylor opens the door to a thrilling new world… but what if it’s all a trap?

GPYS Rewind: Mick Foley (2012)

Interviewing Mick Foley back in 2012 was crazy. We had been doing this show for less than a year at the time and the circumstances of sitting down with the Hardcore Legend at 3:00 in the morning still blow my mind.

But we did it.

The fact that in the ensuing 13 years Walter would go on to hang out with Mick Foley multiple times, including opening for him a few years back at the Montreal Comiccon is extra crazy.

We’ve gone from a few hundred (if we were lucky) downloads a month to several thousand. We’ve grown as a show and having amazing guests like Mick Foley definitely helped put us on the map.

I don’t think I’ll ever get over being allowed to just set up a computer at a Just for Laughs party and record with whoever wanted to chat. The other crazy thing is that at the time of recording Walter and I were both still in our 20s and Mick was in his 40s. Time flies.

Anyways, the more things change, the more things stay the same. Mick Foley is back in Montreal returning to the historic Café Cleopatra TOMORROW NIGHT October 2nd. As of recording this episode there are still some tickets available so get them now! Multiple tiers of tickets available now at Eventbrite.

Le Grand Yes And – GPYS 321

The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks two of the founders of the new improv festival in Montreal “Le Grand Yes And!” Lucie Gee and Costa Tsimiklis: “What would your last meal on earth be?” That question was asked by Julie Santini back in episode 320.

Le Grand Yes And! is the latest festival in a city famed for its festivals. Festival organizers Lucie Gee & Costa Tsimiklis (along with Victor Neves Borges) have decided that not only does Montreal deserve an improv festival, it deserves to have a bilingual improv festival. Le Grand Yes And will feature 15 shows and 10 workshops for lovers of improv comedy at all levels. There’s even a few shows that feature our old pal Mariana Vial!

Lucie and Costa joined Sarah and I at the back of Grumpy’s to talk about Le Grand Yes And, what prompted them to get on stage and of course because this is a show hosted by me: Hollow Knight: Silksong. It’s a good game, ok?

So sit back, relax and get ready to say “yes, and” to a brand new Montreal festival.

Welcome to a brand new episode of Go Plug Yourself! Montreal’s best podcast if you ask me.

On this week’s episode Lawrence Corber and I are joined by actor, comedian, improviser and all around rule follower Julie Santini. We asked her Pat Guay’s question from a few episodes ago: What annoys you most in your day-to-day life?

Julie Santini is one of Montreal’s exciting up and coming multidisciplinary talents. Having acted and improvised before she’s recently taken to the stage alone as a stand up comedy and is currently honing her craft all over town. As always the Go Plug Yourself podcast is there to sit down and get to know the people that make this city an amazing place for artists (despite the best efforts of politicians or whatever, don’t get me started).

We talk about getting into comedy, Christmas pinatas and narrowly avoid a full length recital of the 1996 film Matilda. You can follow Julie on most social media @juliersantini and check her out almost every other Tuesday at Straight Shooters comedy night at Tequila Bar in Saint Henri. Go Plug Yourself Rewind: Mike Bailey!

It’s a Time Adventure with Mike Bailey!

Back in 2016 we were lucky enough to sit down with (then) up and coming indie wrestler Speedball Mike Bailey, back in town after some successful runs in PWG and AAA. Mike was about to be defending his IWS World Title against former WWE Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio Jr. at Metropolis.

Now they’re a regular on AEW! They challenged the Hurt Syndicate at All-In Texas for the AEW World Tag Team Titles in front of like 30,000 people.

That’s crazy man, crazy.

Fair warning, the audio levels are a little off-balanced for the first few minutes, but it normalizes pretty quickl

Anyhow, enjoy this trip down memory lane, I’m on vacation this week. We’ll be back with a brand new guest in two weeks time. Until then sit back, relax and Go Plug Yourself.

GPYS 319: World’s Smallest Comedy Festival 3

The people asked “Where is that comedy festival that takes place at Hurley’s?” Well, our dear friends at the World’s Smallest Comedy Night heard the people.

The World’s Smallest Comedy Festival is back for the third edition! World’s Smallest Comedy Festival 3 starts August 11 and runs all the way through until August 18. There are at least 15 shows that you can check out.

Walter, Chris and Lawrence are on this one and it descends pretty quickly into mayhem as a result. All three of these wonderful comedians will be popping up all over the World’s Smallest Comedy Festival but if you want a special treat you should head over to Hurley’s at 10 pm on August 12 for “Look Who’s Talking” which will feature both Go Plug Yourself’s own Chris Venditto and Lawrence Corber up on stage being some of the best crowd work comedians in the city.

Tyler Lemco Returns – GPYS 318

The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that ask Dr. Tyler Lemco: “In human history, are things getting better, or worse?” That question asked by Erik Intrevado back in episode 317.

So we’ve had Tyler Lemco on the show before. The man is one of the creative legends of Montreal so he’s always got something new and exciting to plug. He ran for mayor of Montreal! And that’s not even close to the best thing he’s done in the last few years.

Digging into the Go Plug Yourself archives, Tyler Lemco has been on the show 3 times as a solo guest, once as a co-guest and featured on at least 2 episodes of the Holiday Shit Show. Once again filed in the “holy shit we’ve been doing this a long time” folder: The first time Tyler was on the show was in 2013. Simpler times.

Tyler’s latest creative endeavour is bringing out your creative side. That’s right, you. He’s running “Dr Lemco’s Creative Club” which is a series of events that he’s running around the city where you can show up and do something creative. Mess around with paint, make some bracelets, let your creative energies run wild. He’s doing them all over town so you should head to tlem.co and check out the calendar for when he will be in your neighbourhood.

Finally, Dr Tyler Lemco is having a vernissage this Sunday July 13th at4710 Rue Saint-Ambroise Montréal, from 4 pm to 8 pm so you should check that out to.

GPYS 317: Erik Intrevado (RIP Peel Pub)

The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks Erik Intrevado: “What do you think about Crocs?” That question of course was asked in our last episode by Amy Blackmore.

Just who IS Erik Intrevado? Well, he’s one of the up and coming comedy producers in Montreal and he happened to run a show at a little place you may have heard of called the Peel Pub. You may have heard the news that after 60 years of being in business the Peel Pub suddenly closed its door this past weekend. Peel Pub closing left people out of work, a lot of people owed money and Erik without a venue for his open mic night (not to mention some of his gear is currently locked up inside of the building with no certainty of ever being returned).

Walter, Troy and I set up at the back of a bar that ISN’T going anywhere (our beloved Grumpy’s) to talk with Erik Intrevado about producing comedy shows, condo conspiracy theories and trying to figure out just what is becoming of the fair city of Montreal.

But fear not good listener – Erik Intrevado is currently doing his best to land on his feet! He’ll be running a brand-new Pro-Am Open Mic night at the lovely Burgundy Lion (let’s call it what it is here, a step up) starting July 9th! So if you’re in the area do yourself a favour and check it out!
