Rereading The Illuminatus! Trilogy I found a line in there that I have fallen in love with.

“There are great truths and there are lesser truths. The opposite of a lesser truth is false, but the opposite of a great truth is also true.”

So when you say, “Democracy!” about this cockamamie malarkey, I now infer that you are proclaiming a Great Truth. On the one had, there’s votes and counting and stuff and so it is a democracy, on the other hand, there’s so much falsehood and deception and undemocratic institutions layering their influence there’s nothing democratic about it, and on the third hand, OG Athens 300 BC Greek Golden Ages style democracy, where only 40 year old adult male slaveholders get to vote, this is definitely a True Democratic election.

We have a very special treat for you today. We’re starting a new feature for the site, a definitive list of the greatest films of all time as selected by us, and we’re taking a whole episode of the podcast to start the list off with a bang. The format is fairly simple. Start with one film. In the case of our list, we start with Mortdecai. That’s now the list. Then we consider another film, say, John Wick. Is John Wick a better film than Mordecai? It is. It is therefore placed above Mortdecai on the list. Every time we bring up a film in the podcast, or whenever we feel like it, we will continue to organically grow the list until it is complete or the universe ends in heat death. Or possibly we get bored and abandon the project. Who can predict the future in the vicissitudes of possibility?

Not I.

Regardless, we need to offer kind thanks to Cris Sims and Matt Wilson of War Rocket Ajax who began a similar (and original) list with regards to comics, and from whom we stole this idea. Thanks boys!

Finally, the list will be added to the bar at the top so you can easily reference which are, and are not, the greatest films of all time. Joy!

Sophie is off rehearsing for a play that she’s going to be in (I won’t spoil the surprise, she’ll get to tell you all about it in an upcoming episode no doubt) so it leaves Scott, Jon and I to hold down the fort. We do just that. I know I say this every week but seriously, we have not missed a week of podcasting in something like 60 episodes (so 120 weeks?)… we work hard here, tell your friends if you like what we’re doing, since we’re doing it for you.

9ES 20: The Alien is Not in the Breakfast Club

Man, I am completely unsure about what should and shouldn’t be capitalized in that title. I think I got it right, but I can’t be sure. Anyhow it’s Thursday, which means new podcast day (it does not mean it’s Fine Arts Friday… Sophie)! It’s another swanky episode of 9ES! I don’t know what Scott shouts out in the intro, but it certainly sounds a lot like he yells “ICP Clan Forever!” This leads me to believe that his Counterstrike Clan is made up of juggalos.
