9ES 276 – 2022 in Review

The best geek and pop culture podcast in Montreal takes a look back at the year that was 2022. It’s 2022 in Review!

We talk all about the movies, music, television shows, video games and comics that we’ve consumed this year like hungry, hungry nerd hippos.

Apparently having a very young human to take care of really slowed down Jono’s consumption of crap this year, but I guess he also read a lot of that blog about airplane crashes so who can blame him? Scott actually got to see some new movies this year so I guess after like a decade or whatever of being a dad he is finally starting to have some time to himself.

Unfortunately there is no new episode of Garbage Time this week, instead we just made the main episode of 9ES a full 90 minutes. So it’s like the normal episode AND Garbage Time all at once! If you still want to show your support just head on over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen all past episodes of Garbage Time!

9ES 266: Ernest Shackleton and the 25 Worst Comic Book Movies Ever Made

Why hello there, you’ve caught us in a bit of a predicament.

Between the Just for Laughs specials, the Osheaga specials and my planned trip to Winnipeg it seems like we’ve simply run out of time to record a brand new episode of the 9to5 Entertainment System!

However, we don’t want to let you down.

We know that some of you might still be sitting on the fence about subscribing to the 9ES Deluxe Level over on our Patreon so we’ve decided to give you a taste of what you may be missing. We dug into the vast Garbage Time episode archives to grab two episodes that might just encourage you to subcribe:

  1. The episode where Jon gets into details about the Shackleton expedition. If you’re not familiar with Ernest Shackleton well you’re about to be. Never will you feel like an inadequate human being like you will when you hear about how he handled the adversity dealt to him.
  2. The episode where Scott and I go through a list of the Worst Superhero Movies Ever Made and to nobody’s surprise we’ve seen almost all of them.

9ES254: Afraid Of Montreal

The Montreal based geek and pop culture podcast that loves driving trucks and playing women’s hockey is back with episode 254. Oh hey, the Olympics are happening.

 

(For the record, we do neither of those two things).

 

If I could go on a tangent for a moment here (and despite Jon posting, this is Keith writing) I would like to re-iterate how much fun I have recording these dumb podcasts.

 

Work has been especially trying for me these last few weeks, so trying in fact that even though it has been less than 48 hours since we recorded this episode, I am struggling to remember what we really talked about. Work has just been draining me of a lot of energy but I remember having a pretty great time recording this thing with Jon and Scott.

 

Good thing we take notes, eh?

 

Jon is actively participating in the current Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup v.028 Tournament so you know we got that good-good DCSS content that you crave.

 

So Jon is playing DCSS which launched in 2006 but is still actively updated even though it looks like it is from the 90s, Keith is playing Return of the Obra Dinn which is a video game from 2018 that looks like it was made in the 80s and Scott is playing Secret of Mana which is actually from 1993.

 

Video games are cool.

 

We are from Montreal so we talk about hockey in the form of the Canadian Women’s Olympic team and the NHL Skills Competition and we probably talk more about the dumb trucker convoy than we should.

 

This week’s episode of Garbage Time is all about sci-fi television, with Scott finally finishing off Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop series and Keith finishing Season 1 of Raised by Wolves. Check it out over on our Patreon page at the 9ES Deluxe tier.

9ES253: In Space

The Montreal based geek and pop culture podcast that definitely knows more about The Eternals than we do about football is back with episode 253.

 

Besides Scott, it is fair to say that the 9to5 Entertainment System is not really “dialed in” to the world of the NFL. That said, the Buffalo Bills being kind of a tragic team is one of those things that seems to have made its way into general pop-culture. They’re not quite the New York Jets but they’ve somehow always been that loser team people from Toronto like.

 

Once again we talk up the Vice wrestling documentary series “Dark Side of the Ring” and get a little into the specifics of the all-time attendance record for a wrestling event. We’re talking of course about the “Collision in Korea” event in 1995 that took place in Pyongyang, North Korea.

 

We only scratch the surface of the insanity on the episode, do yourself a favour and check out the episode.

 

Scott somehow seems to think that Ghostbusters: Afterlife was a pretty good movie, but maybe that’s just because he’s a dad and wants his kid to be a Ghostbuster? I dunno man.

 

Keith talked about The Eternals again on this podcast, even though he already did that on last week’s episode of Go Plug Yourself. But this time we put it on the list so it’s ok.

 

This week’s episode of Garbage Time is particularly garbage-y… Scott couldn’t make recording since he had a headache so Keith and Jon talk about Spirit Island and some dead celebrities. 9ES246: Dusk Till Dawn Vampires Are Best Vampires

The Montreal geek and pop culture podcast that still doesn’t quite understand Dr. Who is back and this time we talk about Squid Game. Among other things.
There is something extremely compelling about Battle-Royale style fight to the death media, isn’t there? Hunger Games was a massive mainstream media success and now Squid Game is the biggest show ever on Netflix. If that doesn’t say something about where we are at mentally I don’t know what to tell you.
We also really get into another Netflix show and that show is Midnight Mass. I kind of feel like Midnight Mass would have been a lot bigger hit for Netflix if it was quickly (and probably unexpectedly) overtaken by Squid Game but here we are. A slow burn psychological, then supernatural horror is hard to pull off and barring a few incredibly long monologues about the nature of God and death Midnight Mass mostly succeeds.
We round out the episode with a few other spooky/thriller things for you to enjoy since I guess this is our Halloween episode.

9ES 245: Jonathan Hemingway

Your favorite three people in Montreal return to the podcasting airwaves to remind you that indeed, Covid-19 is still a thing and if your name is Josh and you live in Alberta you should really be aware of that by now.

The world breathed a sigh of relief on Monday that they didn’t even know they were holding in when Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram all suddenly stopped for about 10-12 hours. I don’t even know how Jon heard about this happening since he’s stayed away from those things for years.

Jon’s re-watching Seinfeld which may or may not be the Genesis of modern comedy and we figure out how you end up at Bojack Horseman if you go through Arrested Development.

Do you remember that great episode of The John Laroquette show where he thought he wrote a really great book? We talk about that episode a bit and quite frankly we don’t even care if you don’t remember it. That’s what this show is.

Finally, Keith has been watching Midnight Mass and while the jury is still out boy was Episode 5 a lot of fun.

Also, you probably know this but we’ve got a little Patreon going on over there and for every episode of 9ES we publish a companion episode of 9ES Garbage Time. On this week’s Garbage Time we talk about wrestling and D&D as though that wasn’t predictable.

Sophie is off rehearsing for a play that she’s going to be in (I won’t spoil the surprise, she’ll get to tell you all about it in an upcoming episode no doubt) so it leaves Scott, Jon and I to hold down the fort. We do just that.
