Osheaga 2017: Day 3

As the laundry machines spin and spin and the house is slowly getting cleaned up after a weekend of nearly nonstop partying, we reflect on the third and final day of Osheaga.

Sunday did not start well for us. The battery meter on my camera flat-out lied to me and told me that I was going into the day with around 66% power. Somehow on the trip to the festival site it died completely. Stupid lying camera. That meant that all of today’s photos had to be shot on my phone. Fortunately my phone’s camera is pretty sweet. Secondly, the lineup to get into the site was disastrous. Sarah had to wait for over 45 minutes just to get in.

The good news is that it was all up hill from there.

With Sarah still stuck in the never ending line I took the opportunity to bounce around to catch a couple of songs of performers woefully booked at the same time. I managed to catch the tail end of Bishop Briggs set and then head over to the Island Stage to watch some of Weval‘s set as well. The crowds for both acts were a good indication that the Osheaga festival goers had kept something left in the tank for an epic finale to their weekend.

I caught just one song from Phantogram’s set while I got my first beer of the day and honestly, I am glad to report that they’ve upped their energy level from the last time I had seen them play (Osheaga 2014 if my memory serves). Phantogram has always been a band that I have enjoyed in the studio but never really clicked with me live. 9to5 Entertainment System 75: Get to the Intimacy

These new microphones bring about a whole different swarm of hurdles for me, the science dog of audio recording, to overcome. There’s something fishy about this recording. It sounds fine at regular volume, but if you turn it up too loud it gets really weird. I’m gonna do some tests. I guess, just don’t turn us up too loud? I mean, who the hell would just crank up a podcast? “Oh man, is that Episode 75 of 9es? THAT IS MY JAM! TURN THAT SHIT UP!!” Not likely. Another milestone achieved! 75 episodes! We ain’t, going no-where, we ain’t, going nowhere, we’re bad boys for life.

Death From Above 1979 – The Physical World (PG2)

Good news everyone, they’re still apparently elephants.

So remember how I mentioned this week’s article might be about playing around on your phone in public? Yeah, that’s not going to be happening. Instead I’m going to talk about Death From Above 1979 for a few reasons. The first is that their new album “The Physical World” came out today; their first full length studio album in a month shy of a decade. The second is that I will be going to see them this Friday at the MRCY Block Party (along with Metric, Neutral Milk Hotel and some others). So a new album and a show all in the same week means that this article gets to exist today. BEHOLD. I’m going to give you fair warning, the actual review portion of this article is pretty far into it, if you want to skip ahead, just look for the bold text that says “Was it worth the wait?”. I won’t even be mad.

Something strange happened to DFA 1979 when they broke up, it took a little while, but by breaking up right as they were on the rise they left their fan base wanting more and somehow made them more popular. Not only that, but people were discovering the band only to find out they already didn’t exist anymore. Officially they broke up in August 2006, but that had been after several months of not doing anything or playing any shows, so the “real” break up date would probably be a few months earlier. Anyhow, details of the breakup aside, the band managed to ascend even further than when they were actually together. Instead of being just a cool band from Toronto who make energetic noise-pop, they were now this legendary band you never got to see live even though everyone says their shows were amazing and now your life is incomplete.

I got to see them in 2004 I think during Pop Montreal and in the haze of a decade’s worth of shows and substance abuse I recall having an amazing time. I also feel like I saw them another time before the breakup but I can’t be sure. No matter. They were gone, I felt like I didn’t get to see them enough, a lot of people never got to see them. The legend grew.

Fast forward to 2011 when they were suddenly playing a handful of shows including an appearance at Osheaga. At this point there was no real indication that they were actually going to be getting back together and making new music, so we only had to take this as a “reunion”. Whatever, it was another chance to see them again so I was there. They killed it and were a highlight of the whole festival. I got to rock out to Sebastien Granger and Jesse Keeler one more time and that would be that, or so I thought. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…

9to5 Entertainment System 24: The One Where Sophie Talks About Sports

Usually, since I’m the last person to touch the podcast I take a line that makes me laugh and make it the title. This time around however, Scott Shanghai’d that privileged by creating the admittedly hilarious episode image that you see below. Yes indeed, Sophie talks about sports in this episode. Sophie’s view of sports is somewhat accurately depicted in this image. Can you find 3 things wrong with the image kids? Answers below. Enjoy the show.

9to5 Entertainment System 9: Get A Bunch of Domes, Have Them Fight

See? I told you we were getting our feet back underneath us! This is totally a new episode of 9ES! It’s barely been 2 weeks since the last one! Ok, technically there was no new podcast last week, but two weeks ago we had an episode of both, so quit your complaining. I know, you’re going to tell me that you weren’t complaining, but I know you were. You did it with your eyes. Anyhow, listen in as we get our geek on for your listening pleasure Oh yeah, this is a mini-announcement that’s about to happen! I’m gonna try to make Thursdays the podcast day! That means there will either be an episode of Go Plug Yourself or 9to5 Entertainment System every Thursday! It’s only really a mini-announcement since I don’t know if we’ll actually be able to accomplish that, but by God we’ll try.
