What Scott and his fancy art might not know is that I was a Sega Master System kid.  The SMS launched in 85, compared to 83 for the NES (both those dates are the Japanese dates) and maybe it should have been more powerful?  Maybe it was?  Sadly the games were just never as good as the NES’s.

There were a few titles that really shone, like Wonder Boy 3:  The Dragon’s Trap (recently remade!) and Phantasy Star and maybe one of the Alex Kidds.  But the SMS’s library never even came close to the size or quality of the NES’s library.  The 16 bit generation (Genesis and Super Nintendo) only made the disparity worse.  People may think that the console wars are hot today (xBONE ONE X lol amirite?) in a way that they were not 30 years ago but they are totally wrong.

“Sega Genesis does what Nintendon’t” and other classics (probably comparing controllers to genitals) were front and center.  “John Romero will make you his bitch” actual advertising.  Ok, I guess?  Anyway, identifying as a Sega kid guaranteed you an appreciation for the underdog, because you could fanboy all you wanted but Sega’s offerings were undoubtedly inferior.

Did all of this set young Jon on a path?  I can recall at 12 in the schoolyard moodily exclaiming “the Sega ads are better, but the games are worse” breathlessly trying to explain to the other children.  The TV is lying to us.  Were their worlds as devastated as mine was?  I was an innocent child.

A Perspicacious Geek’s New Year Resolutions

So Keithmas (and that other holiday that ends in “mas”) has come and gone.  New Year’s Eve was a thing that we did and got drunk at and we’re 6 days into the year that will be remembered as 2015. Obviously this is a time where everybody makes unreasonable promises to themselves and calls them New Year Resolutions. They’re usually “eat better” and “don’t be a dick”. Or some sort of variation on that theme (“workout more” and “stop slapping babies” is my personal version of this). I don’t need to tell you how to live. Or maybe I do? Well, if you want to be a geek of style and sophistication like me (ha!) then maybe some of these resolutions will work for you.

Play More Board Games

I’ve got a whole thing about using boardgames as a gateway drug into geekier things, but it’s also fine to just play the games without a bigger agenda. As I mentioned back in that article, we are currently in the midst of a boom for board games. The caliber of games is on the rise and the ease of getting them is as well. Most major malls now have shops where you can pick up more interesting geared-towards-adults board games. I took this little picture of my gaming shelf in my closet the other day and realized that there are some games in here that I’ve only played once or twice. In some cases I haven’t played them even once. I (and you) should try to get a game night together from time to time. Hell, even some of the more “expensive” games only run around 50-60$. If four people chip 15$ you can go out and buy a game just for the occasion and it will cost you the same as going to the movies. Only you end up with a board game for keepsies at the end of it all. What a deal!

Death From Above 1979 – The Physical World (PG2)

Good news everyone, they’re still apparently elephants.

So remember how I mentioned this week’s article might be about playing around on your phone in public? Yeah, that’s not going to be happening. Instead I’m going to talk about Death From Above 1979 for a few reasons. The first is that their new album “The Physical World” came out today; their first full length studio album in a month shy of a decade.  The second is that I will be going to see them this Friday at the MRCY Block Party (along with Metric, Neutral Milk Hotel and some others). So a new album and a show all in the same week means that this article gets to exist today. BEHOLD. I’m going to give you fair warning, the actual review portion of this article is pretty far into it, if you want to skip ahead, just look for the bold text that says “Was it worth the wait?”.  I won’t even be mad.

Something strange happened to DFA 1979 when they broke up, it took a little while, but by breaking up right as they were on the rise they left their fan base wanting more and somehow made them more popular. Not only that, but people were discovering the band only to find out they already didn’t exist anymore. Officially they broke up in August 2006, but that had been after several months of not doing anything or playing any shows, so the “real” break up date would probably be a few months earlier.  Anyhow, details of the breakup aside, the band managed to ascend even further than when they were actually together. Instead of being just a cool band from Toronto who make energetic noise-pop, they were now this legendary band you never got to see live even though everyone says their shows were amazing and now your life is incomplete.

I got to see them in 2004 I think during Pop Montreal and in the haze of a decade’s worth of shows and substance abuse I recall having an amazing time. I also feel like I saw them another time before the breakup but I can’t be sure. No matter.  They were gone, I felt like I didn’t get to see them enough, a lot of people never got to see them. The legend grew.

Fast forward to 2011 when they were suddenly playing a handful of shows including an appearance at Osheaga. At this point there was no real indication that they were actually going to be getting back together and making new music, so we only had to take this as a “reunion”. Whatever, it was another chance to see them again so I was there. They killed it and were a highlight of the whole festival. I got to rock out to Sebastien Granger and Jesse Keeler one more time and that would be that, or so I thought. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
