This is a shitty day for this column. I’m still wondering what I can do to spice this bitch up when I have days like today, where the entire world seems hellbent on being fascinated by garbage. What are people caring about right now you ask? There’s that trailer for that movie series about sparkling vampires that everyone seems to love so much that’s out. That’s a big deal to some. No, I’m not going to link to it and no, I haven’t watched the trailer in question. Apparently vampires are the talk of the (internet) town today though, as some photos leaked of Johnny Depp in the new Tim Burton film “Dark Shadows”. The popular consensus is of course that he looks like Michael Jackson in that makeup, but I’m more upset about something else. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…

Is it sort of sad that every time I write this column I need to physically go to the site to see what number I’ve gotten to? Mark my words, sooner or later you will see the same number twice. I will likely be none the wiser. Probably ever.
Also, I’ve stopped completely trusting Google Trends. Not their service, it’s a fine service, but I’ve stopped trusting it to providing me with content I can actually use. Kind of. Let me explain.
The problem with their service is that it relies to heavily on the users of the internet. Who uses the internet? Goddamn everybody. What does everybody care about? Celebrity news. Or so it seems. As such, WTF World has sort of become a celebrity news column. I’m not entirely cool with that. To avoid that, I’m going to be playing with some of the many matrices (which is the plural of ‘matrix’) that Google Trends offers to try and come up with some gaming and sports news. Or as I like to call it: real news. I’ll still probably have some trending celebrity stuff too because gosh darnit, I’ve just grown accustomed to this shit.
Daryl Hannah literally just got fucking arrested (I’m writing this Tuesday night). There’s a video of it! ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
Jon is our resident technical expert here at 9to5.cc. He is also an avid player of the online video game “League of Legends”, spending significant hours, um, competing (is that right?) at this every single week. He assures me that he is quite good at it. I have no idea what this game is, aside from the facts that it is played on a computer and it’s multi-player and online.
I sat with Jon for a few minutes to talk to him about the game, the experience, and the phenomenon that is “LoL”.

Wow, that is a mouthful of a title. First off, I just want to point out that Jack Layton’s death trended worldwide yesterday. I thought that was nice. Considering that the London Riots couldn’t hold a top spot in Google Trends while they were happening says a lot about people’s browsing habits. It’s good to see people actually taking notice to a pretty a major death even though it didn’t directly impact their own country. Good on you world. Good on you.
Of course, there was an earthquake today. You can tell because 5 out of the top 10 Google searches in America are earthquake related. I recommend clicking that link to see photos of the devastation. Just kidding, it’s just a series of photos that largely centers around people standing around looking slightly concerned that they’ve been forced to leave their offices in the middle of the day and maybe they didn’t lock their workstations and maybe
their boss didn’t evacuate and has discovered their browsing history mostly consists of craigslist and reddit. Wouldn’t know what that’s like. The rest of the people in those photos seem to be enjoying the afternoon off. I also like that the LA Times is reporting on the 5.9 quake the way Sports Illustrated would report on your kid’s soccer game this Saturday. “Pssh, amateurs.”
Libya! I can’t believe that I wrote about this conflict 6 months ago and only now, in August, is it coming to a conclusion. This is a little more newsworthy than an earthquake. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
So I’ve been following the “Day of Departure” pretty closely onAl Jazeera blogs today (I really cannot stress following this enough), and (so far) as of 10:30 pm local time things remained relatively peaceful all day, which I have tremendous respect for. When your country is falling apart and your leaders have been stealing billions of dollars from you for 30 years, throwing a brick through a window or burning down a government building must feel pretty good.
I was talking with some colleagues about the whole Dickwolf thing, and why it exploded the way it did, we drew some interesting conclusions. I need to stress conclusions here, because seriously, it’s over. Both sides crossed the line, and now people are scrapping the barrel of controversy. I mean, barking at Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day for opinions to keep the debate going? Give it up for serious.
Who is that a picture of? It’s Hollywood producer Dick Wolf! Get it? Yeah… good times.
I feel that I sort of need to do a “take two” on my previous article.
You see, I keep this blog as a sort of writing exercise, since eventually there will be a proper site here:http://www.9to5.cc/ (hey, there totally is a site here now… sweet deal). Until that site goes live I just try to keep the habit of occasionally writing. I don’t really review what I write here, and there’s next to no editing (as some of you have pointed out).
With that in mind, my thoughts yesterday may not have been as clear orconcise as they could have been, I was also not fully informed about the insanity that was transpiring regarding the Dickwolf Debacle (I was personally leaning towards “Dickwolfgate” but Dickwolf Debacle does have a better ring to it). So in an effort to maintain brevity, I present the following in point form as a footnote to yesterday’s article: ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
My final thoughts on the matter here.
Edit: Since some of you are coming in from links and are so lazy as to not check other posts, I thought you might get a kick out of the infamous Penny Arcade comic in question minus the dickwolf rape. It’s right here. On this blog. Seriously people.
