GPYS Fantasia: Let Me Make You a Martyr Part 1 (John Swab & Corey Asraf)

The Fantasia International Film Festival marks the World Premiere of the first feature film from the creative duo of John Swab and Corey Asraf. A slightly dreamlike recounting of the day Drew Glass (Niko Nicotera) returns to his hometown to seek vengeance on his drug dealing father. Along the way reconnecting with the deteriorating figures of his past, some redeemable and others damned to condemnation. Oh, and a hitman named Pope (Marilyn Manson) wants to kill him.

I was lucky enough to sit down the with John and Corey to talk about this movie, where it came from creatively and the road to making their first feature. Enjoy the show!

Go Plug Your Fantasia Film: Jeff Maher and Colin Price (Bed of the Dead)

If ever there was a movie worthy of screening at midnight it would be a film about a murderous bed preying on the lives of the guilty crossed with a police procedural. Former Montrealer Jeff Maher brought his film “Bed of the Dead” to Fantasia this year and came on the show to talk about his film, which horror movies he loved growing up and how important a few drinks can be when it comes to dreaming up ideas for films. “Bed of the Dead” has another screening at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival August 1st, tickets HERE.gpys-fanasia-1

Never Tear Us Apart – Fantasia 2016 Rapid Review

unnamedOne of my favorite parts of Fantasia are the shorts. Not to diminish too much from the excellent short film spotlights, but I particularly enjoy when a short film is screened before a feature length film. The Fantasia International Film Festival doesn’t show previews before films, but what does happen from time to time is a delightful short film.

It’s a practice I wish was more prevelant in all theaters, as lots of great short films end up getting made and never end up being seen on the big screen, usually relegated to Vimeo or YouTube, or maybe an extra feature on a DVD.

Enter Sid Zanforlin’s shrot “Never Tear Us Apart”, a homegrown horror short film from the home of Fantasia: Quebec.

Short-form horror can be a lot of fun, and it takes a pretty good handle on the genre to pack the right amount of humour, gore, suspense and twists into a tiny package.

“Never Tear Us Apart” has a run time of about 6 minutes (and that includes closing credits) and manages to touch on all the important parts of the genre. The asshole friend, a few good and gory kills, a chase and a macabre twist. The fact that it hits all these nice little notes in such a small run time and tells a concise, clean little horror tale is a good testament to the love of the genre that Zanforlin must have.

It’s worth a watch.

9to5 Goes to Fantasia 11: The World’s End and Halley

So we didn’t quite get to the same number of films as we did last year, but hey, we had more written reviews this year (not to mention our interview with Lloyd Kaufman and upcoming interview with Kane Hodder) so deal with it. It was closing night so I checked out the big closing film of Fantasia Edgar Wright’s The World’s End and Jono went the indie route and watched Mexican slow paced zombie drama Halley, which just so happened to have a short film called My Pain is Worse Than Your Pain before it that Jon also seemed to enjoy.
