The Montreal podcast that asks Louis Rastelli: How do you explain your hair?

Let me try to put together a loose timeline of events for you. Louis Rastelli started writing local music reviews at some point in the 1980s. Fed up with mainstream printed press like The Gazette and not satisfied with alt-weeklies like The Mirror and The Hour, Louis turned his attention towards the DIY approach of publishing zines. Not the least of which was Fish Piss. Perhaps realizing that these small runs of of zines were likely candidates of work that could be lost to the ages, he became one of the founders of ARCMTL to promote and preserve independent culture. Working on his own (and other) zines lead him towards forming a kind of zine collective/distribution model called Distroboto (which re-purposes old cigarette machines to distribute zines, prints and music among other things). In 2002 he was one of the organizers of the first edition of Expozine in Montreal, and this weekend he is still on board as one of the organizers of the 18th edition.

I think that brings us up to speed.

Sitting down with Louis brought back a wave of memories for me, so the listener will have to endure my half remembered ramblings of zine launches, payphone hacking and cassette tapes. In order to make this slightly more bearable for you I enlisted the help of special guest host Inés Anaya to keep me on track.

So listen now, enjoy the show, and make your to 1025 Bélanger (Église Saint-Arsène) this weekend (November 16 & 17, 11 am to 6 pm) for the most recent edition of Expozine. Entrance is free so you can spend your money supporting the artists.

Of course a big thank you to Inés Anaya for stepping in on hosting duties this episode, follow this funny lady on all the socials. Facebook @clout__atlas on Instagram. She’s quite hip so she is probably on those social media platforms you haven’t even heard of. The comedy journal she talks about in this episode? You should check that out too: The Hindwing.

As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Leighland Beckman and Aural Turpitude!

Keith does all sorts of things here on 9to5.cc, he works with the other founders on 9to5 (illustrated), co-hosts our two podcasts: The 9to5 Entertainment System and Go Plug Yourself and blogs here as The Perspicacious Geek.
