The Montreal geek and pop culture podcast that thinks Dune’s giant sand worms are cooler than Shang-Chi’s big giant dragons is back another episode. Trust the science.

So by all accounts Lowtax was not a great person, probably not even a “good” person. But in a lot of ways that is pretty emblematic of the internet on the whole. It’s filled with not good people. It’s filled with shitty people. Or people pretending to be shitty, which is kind of the same thing. Was he kind of ahead of the curve when it came to predicting that the internet would make you stupid and coming up with a way to monetize that over 20 years ago? Definitely. 

When most people were still Asking Jeeves questions at the public computer in the library Something Awful was probably discovering goatse. Let that sink in.

Something we don’t really bring up when discussing the Travis Scott Astroworld Tragedy (brought to you in part by FortNite) was that Travis Scott has been charged twice for inciting riots at his concerts. Both times pleading guilty. So his lip service “how could this have happened” apology rings extra hollow.

Finally the back half of the show is all about those good-good blockbuster movies. We watched both Dune and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings which means we get really nerdy up in here about comic books and sci-fi. Both of them should be up on The List sooner or later.

Garbage Time is back this week and we talk a bunch about AEW and then about some movies that were not good or memorable enough to be mentioned on the main show and then we talk about vampires. The Montreal podcast that knows your anger, and knows your dreams is back. It’s the podcast that has been everything you want to be.
That’s right, CM Punk is back in professional wrestling and that’s pretty cool for about two-thirds of us. We also talk about Scarlett Johansson going toe-to-toe with the House of Mouse and question Netflix’s business model. We also get into obesity. Like we get into it. We are all obese now. We live what we talk about.
Not really, but what we do dig into is some of the science (or lack of science) that seems to be tied to human weight gain in the last few years as we look a little at the research going on at Slime Mold Time Mold which I will admit is a weird name for a website.
Finally we wrap things up with a little bit of talk about The Masters of the Universe.

Boy I get so excited talking about Dune I forget what I wanted to say and run over my own ideas.

It’s rare that an art enters your life at a critical period, is in fact widely regarded as great, and then grows with age, so that one doesn’t have to regret the nostalgia tainted love.  Like, I was way into Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness: it was my first CD; it got a lot of rotation, but listening back to Billy Corgan’s whines as an adult I cannot but be certain: there is the music of a teenage boy.  Sorry Billy.

Not so with Dune.  On this last reread I think I have absorbed some of the more structural aspects of the work.  Where before the complexity overwhelmed maybe now I see the basic scaffold the sci-fi is clinging to.  I use basic here not in the pejorative sense, but more to imply the fundamental Vonnegut-“all stories follow the same basic shape” shape.  This isn’t a bad thing, more of a broadening sense of appreciation for the storytelling devices.  Like I failed to clearly say in the podcast there’s a core story that’s approachable and recognizable hiding behind the sandworms and witches and time piercing space Jesus.  Rare that a book still presents undiscovered country after a half-dozen rereads.

I hope that wasn’t too pretentious.

Anyway, maybe there will come a time when I will look back on the titanic cynicism of the book, the venom directed at the modern institutions of governance (and messiahs!), and remind myself that cynicism is an expression of naivete and I will be past it like the Litany says.  Or maybe I’ll actually enjoy the 3rd book?

Probably not on both counts.

I been watching a lot of retro speed run videos on Youtube.  Crazy when you see it on the screen like that, but check it out.

My favorite video games from when I was a kid.  Played by people who fucking love those games more than most of us love anything.  The kind of persistence and dedication these guys have is probably insane, to work for thousands of hours to shave seconds (or fractions of seconds) off the world record of a 40 year old video game.

Ok so if you think that’s nuts come with me to the next level.  A Youtube charity hosts races through games.  Races done by people in the speedrunning community.  Want to watch two obsessed nerds race through the worst Zelda game?
