Man, I can’t wait until I have a better put together office. You know, better put together than all my stuff out on the coffee table.

On a totally unrelated note, every single time I write the word “Perspicacious” I think I’m going to mess up the spelling, but I think I’ve got it nailed.

Did I Write This Week?

Yes! Not what I was originally planning on writing, but writing happened all the same. But I didn’t finish off the zombie story as I had planned. Still, I managed to find time to write a little bit creatively. Sophie’s turn as head-writer over on 9to5 (illustrated) is coming to a close and I’m next in line, so that meant for the first time in a very long time, it was my turn to helm the strip for a while.

I looked it up, my last run as head writer was my “True-Er Detective” story that we published back in January of 2015. Which means I probably wrote them around November or December 2014. Wow. It’s been 2 years.

Did I Write This Week? – Perspicacious Geek

Did I Write This Week?

Yes, but woefully little. I took some notes on how I want a few key interactions to work out in the novel. Some major revelations and turning points for the characters. [Game of Thrones Spoilers ahead] I feel like George R. R. Martin had some major moments like the Red Wedding or Ned’s beheading already in mind before he got to them. These moments profoundly change the way many other characters behave for the rest of the story and I think that if you’re going to have these big twists you need to know they’re coming so you can start thinking about how the character will react moving forward.

No matter how much of a grasp you have on a character and who they are, a life-changing moment can possibly drastically shift the way they’re going to behave for the rest of the story. So, since I’ve got a few of these moments in mind (ok, so probably not Red Wedding level twists), I think it’s a good idea to have them in my head so I can think about how characters will react afterwards.

Then I got to thinking about these moments, and how they’re going to be communicated to the audience.

I marathoned my way through Mr. Robot over the past few weeks. Both seasons in about 20 days or something. As I discuss on the upcoming 9ES, a device that Mr. Robot starts using an awful lot towards the end of the second season is where they reveal something to a character, but not to the audience.

Example:

A character walks in and hear’s gasping coming from the living room. The character gets nervous and approaches cautiously, peering around the corner. The camera angle shifts to the character’s face. “You.” Cut away to another scene.

So, in this case, our character knows who is in the living room, but we as the audience do not. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…

Did I Write This Week?

After last week’s terrible failure I can inform you happily that yes, I did get some creative writing done this week. However, it was not without its own special set of setbacks.

What Happened?

Remember how I told you that my goal was to actually finish off Zombies and Loathing? Well, it turns out that somehow I’ve lost an entire completed chapter/part. Which is a huge bummer. I literally sat down, loaded up Google Drive and wrote about 50% of the next part and wanted to go back to cross-reference something I had previously written only to find that I didn’t actually have it saved anywhere.

Not on my hard drive, not on my Google drive. Nowhere.

I don’t know what the hell happened but I feel like this has taught me a valuable lesson about double and triple saving things.

There’s a bit of a silver lining though in the fact that in my search across multiple storage mediums I found some old notes I took last year about the book that I want to right. It’s only a bit of a silver lining though since I’m really, really not happy with some of the ideas I had from a year ago. What the hell was I thinking? I mean, I guess it’s good that my ideas have evolved since then to places that I’m a lot happier with, but it’s like finding an old treasure chest and finding out that it’s just full of Canadian Tire Money or something. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
