Fantasia Fest Review: Clive Barker`s History of the Devil

I was just telling Jon i feel intellectually inadequate to write this review hahaha! Here i am at home, having seen the play, and i`ve been staring at my screen for a while with no clue how to start. Ok i guess i`ll open with this: I absolutely love Clive Barker. He has a certain romanticism in his horror writing that allows even me, the greatest chicken-shit there ever was, to enjoy horror films and stories. The way he presents them is just so ethereal and graceful, murderous acts and gore infused images aside, it makes me happy even though it creeps me out a little bit. He tends to presents a certain existentialist conundrum that makes me think, i have to appreciate that.

Fantasia Movie Review: Imaginaerum

I was pretty excited to watch Imaginaerum coming into Fantasia, as I will be any movie that features creepy, steam punk snowmen in aviator caps. I had expectations that this film would be the next “Never Ending Story“, a fantasy tale that wouldn’t be afraid to cross over to the dark side and would allow itself to be scary. Visually, the film plays with light and darkness quite well, and the contrast help to orient yourself between the real and fantasy worlds.

The imagery is quite slick, but at times it almost seems a little too slick, and that sort of hints at one of the problems I had with the film, in at times, it seems like it wants to be a music video rather than a fantasy movie. Sadly, it seems as if this was completely intentional. Director Stobe Harju’s previous experience comes in the world of music video direction, and he pulls out a lot of tricks from that toolbox to good effect, though at times he probably should have held back a little bit. Some restraint in the use of sharp angles and the ever-present blue cooling lens filter could have helped. The visual effects were often very cool looking, but they could have used a little more… grime. Something to help separate the actors from the sound stage, and make it seem a little more like they were actually interacting with the world they were supposed to be in.

The full title of the movie is “Imagineaerum by Nightwish“, with Nightwish being a symphonic heavy metal band from Finland who both provide most of the music for the movie as well as appearing extensively in the film. Look for lyrics like this from the song “Storytime” (from the soundtrack):

I am the voice of Never-Never-Land
The innocence, the dreams of every man
I am the empty crib of Peter Pan

9to5 Goes to Fantasia 4: Go Down Death and OXV: The Manual

Jon and Keith again tackle two wildly different films with Go Down Death and OXV: The Manual. Go Down Death is a black and white tribute film to the strange absurd film making of yesteryear and OXV is a mathematical, philosophical romance story about measurable luck. These sure do sound like Fantasia Festival films don’t they? They sure do! gotofantasia

9to5 Goes to Fantasia: Thanatomorphose and The Battery

Fantasia Movie Review: Bounty Killer

Post-apocalyptic action movies are abundant in this day and age, from Terminator: Rise of the Machines to Death Race, it’s not hard to find one if you’re a fan of the genre. It can, however, be tough to find a good one. One that blends action with solid characterization and a narrative that makes sense from start to finish. One like Henry Saine’s “Bounty Killer“.

Sophie and I went to see Bounty Killer yesterday, and we both felt that it was a triumph of the genre film, gory action, and fun action.

Scott: I wanna start off by saying that this was a great action movie, and I can’t wait for it’s general release because I want to see it again. This is gonna be one movie that I’ll pick up on BluRay to add to my collection.

Soph: Yeah i feel the same. This was the perfect movie to see with some buddies, yelling and cheering at the screen.

Scott: The Fantasia crowd certainly didn’t hurt. Everyone was into the movie in the theatre.

So the roots of Bounty Killer start in two of my favorite places; the internet and comic books. Jason Dodson and Henry Saine started a Kickstarter project to fund the release of the Bounty Killer graphic novel.

From there, they went on to make a short film, which led to the production of the full length feature. One thing that I did like about the feature film was the use of animation. The art was slick and stylized, but also helped to set the tone for the movie; a fun, blood splattering romp through a war-blasted world. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…

9to5 Goes to Fantasia: The Dirties

So The Dirties is a little film that is shot in the way a bunch of kids filming their own movie. The twist is that it becomes about planning a school shooting, the other twist is that it’s a comedy. The other twist (ok, this isn’t a twist in the film) is that it was picked up as part of Kevin Smith’s Film Club and is getting a much larger release as a result. Did we like it? Spoilers, we did.
