Depending on how you keep track of the iterations, the legendary Montreal institute that is Turbo Haüs is now in its third form. Finding a new home on St-Denis the good people of Turbo Haüs continue to run one of Montreal’s coolest venues. Sergio is one of those good people.

Go Plug Yourself 116: Sergio Da Silva

It kind of amazes me that we’ve never had Sergio on the show before now. Sergio used to tear people new assholes as part of legendary local band Trigger Effect and is now part owner of the all new TurboHaüs. Also, tangentially, I’ve known Sergio for like over a decade. Weird. If you’re not familiar with TurboHaüs then you should get informed. Sergio talks about their upcoming TurboTimes festival that runs Wednesday to Saturday starting October 12th at TurboHaüs (5011 Notre Dame Ouest). And sleeping in Walmart parking lots.gpys116-sergio

R.I.P Nick Babeu

So last night at work I got a message from Raz saying “Did you hear what happened to Nick?” I had assumed that she was referring to the tragedy of Nick’s father passing on Tuesday. A few hours later I found out that it was even worse: Nick died Wednesday night. A mainstay of the Montreal music scene, Nick brought this city hardcore music for the past ten years with Trigger Effect, a mixture of music and sideshow insanity with Fear and Loathing, battle of the bands where the bands would actually battle each other and also created an amazing concert/comedy/party venue in the form of Turbo Haüs. To say something like “he will be missed” would be a massive understatement.

He was a friend of 9to5 (dot cc) and he was even closer to our friends The BCASA and Bones Malones. Our thoughts go out to his friends, family, band and anyone who’s ever had the pleasure to know him. It might be hard to listen to, but if you’re up for it Walter and I sat down this February at Turbo Haüs with Nick to talk about stories from the road, his music and his life and a bunch of laughs. I think it gives you an idea of how much fun and how awesome he was. If you’re up for it, give it a listen.

Go Plug Yourself 30: Nick Babeu (Trigger Effect/Turbo Haüs)

First of all, I will apologize again for the lateness of this episode. Due to various circumstances we recorded an entire episode that is too hot for the internet. We might add it later as a DVD special feature. Anyhow, we scrambled for a guest, Walter came through with his Illuminati connections and hooked us up with Nick. If you don’t know, Nick is the lead singer of one of Montreal’s most kick ass acts “Trigger Effect” and has just put the finishing touches on his latest endeavour, a grungy little venue known as Turbo Haüs that you will fall in love with as soon as you step inside (if you can find it in the labyrinth that is 1180 St-Antoine). Turbo Haüs doesn’t fuck around and will be showing movie screenings, comedy shows and of course musical acts. Also, Nick loves Michael Jackson. Finally, we had some power issues with our recording equipment, so there’s some annoying edit points towards the end of the episode. Deal with it.
