The Montreal podcast that asks Alexis Diamond: “Where can you find the best ice cream in Montreal?” (asked by Montreal guitarist Pierre-Luc Rioux in episode 232).

Alexis Diamond is bringing a definite air of class to Go Plug Yourself this week. After all, it’s not every day you speak to someone nominated for a Governor General’s Literary Award. I suppose it’s not every day that you speak to someone who can honestly refer to themselves as an opera librettist either. Nominated in the category of translation for her work translating Pascal Brullemans’ Amaryllis & Little Witch, a set of two dark fairy tales celebrating strong young female characters.

I’ve always been fascinated by the art of translation. If you want to give yourself just a taste how much translations can vary from one to another, check out the variations of the “proemic verse” column of the translations of Homer’s Illiad and Odyssey to see how different the same original text can be interpreted.

Yeah, it’s that kind of podcast this week.

Chris Venditto Returns! – Montreal Roast Battle – GPYS 192

The Montreal podcast that asks Chris Venditto (who’s organizing a Montreal Roast Battle): Can you describe the circumstances that lead you into a relationship with a bear? (Thanks Elspeth and Deidre!)

Our boy Chris was nice enough to come into my house, and sit on my couch, and drink my water and this guy… this guy, the “Venditto” sits there and tells me, IN MY HOUSE that the sauce from the store is just as good as the sauce we make in the backyard. This guy. Can you believe it?

Chris (with some help from his Perfect Bite buds) is putting together “Word Fight: A Montreal Roast Battle” featuring some of Montreal’s hottest up and coming comedians battling it out (and then judged by a panel of even more talented comedians). That all starts on October 6th (check out the first Facebook event here) and runs all the way to 26th at the historic Cafe Cleopatra.

Andrew Albert is one of this fine country’s top comedy talents and it’s just a little bit crazy that same guy who will be featured on the All Star Show of the Halifax Comedy Festival next week will be playing at the intimate Piranha Bar here in Montreal in just a few days. Also, he knows a lot about wine. A LOT. ABOUT. WINE. Seriously, he’s a card carrying sommelier.
I’m not joking.
Why would I joke about that?
Andrew talks to us about the plight of taxi cab drivers, life on the road and of course: wine.

Mariana Vial (Jazz Ands) – Go Plug Yourself 175

The fact that Mariana Vial hasn’t been on this show yet is kind of a tragedy. We’ve been good friends since at some point in 2001 I would guess and she’s been a talented part of the Montreal improv scene for what seems like forever. Her most recent endeavor is “The Jazz Ands” a musical improv troupe that is performing monthly at The Montreal Improve. Featuring Sandi Armstrong, Coco Belliveau, Adina Katz, Mariana Vial, Heidi Lynne Weeks, and Marie Fatima Rudolf on the Keys. Their next show is Valentine’s Day (and will subsequently most likely be following a rom-com theme) at 8:30 at Montreal Improve.

Rachel Gendron – Go Plug Yourself Podcast 129

Montreal’s best English podcast (for now) returns with episode 129! I just noticed while posting this that our last 6 or 7 episodes have all been return guests. I mean, that’s cool and all and it’s understandable that with 129 episodes there’s going to be some repeat offenders. But this week we welcome a brand new guest to the show! One of Montreal’s many, many shining stars of comedy, Rachel comes on the show to talk about her upcoming shows but of course we also talk about Are You Afraid of the Dark? And Eerie, Indiana, obviously.

Rachel has a LOT of shows coming up, she’ll be performing at the SheDot Festival in Toronto taking place May 4th to 7th and at Queer and Present Danger on May 11th here in Montreal (at Comedyworks) and she’s got her ongoing monthly show “Alohaha” every month too!

Go Plug Yourself 122: Paul Ash & Jason Hatrick

There is literally no way to know whether or not either of these two people have ever been on the show before. Certainly not by Googling them in that search bar. According to the records, neither one of them have been on the show before. Which is strange, since Paul seems to remember being on the show. I’m just as confused as you are but hey, after 122 episodes things are a little blurry you guys.

Go Plug Yourself 90: Spiceoholic (Louis and Renee)

We’ve been meaning to branch out into incorporating more culinary guests on the show for some time now, it’s taken us 90 episodes to actually get there but we did it everyone! Louis and Renee, the Montreal entrepreneurs who started Spiceoholic come on the show to talk about their amazing hot sauces. Walter and I do live samples of each of the three sauces they brought to share but we resist the temptation to try the gazillion scoville ghost pepper. What’s a scoville? Well, that and a million other things about hot sauce are revealed in this week’s episode! Seriously the sauce is the tits. I wouldn’t tell you to give them money over on their Kickstarter if I was not serious about how good this sauce is.
