BOM-2017-web-box-blueEvery year, we do a bit of campaigning for that “Best of Montreal” thing that do over at Cult MTL. The validation that comes from being voted as one of Montreal’s favorite anythings usually gives us the confidence boost necessary to do what we do for a little while longer.

Obviously we want you to vote for us in the appropriate categories (Best Podcast, Best Website, Best Artist, etc) but we also want to give some love to our friends.

In order for your votes to count, you need to fill out a minimum of 25 categories. So, if you’re not sure what to vote for, why not check out our list for some ideas? I mean, maybe you have your own favorite things but 25 categories is an awful lot and I think we can all agree that Starbucks doesn’t really need that recognition as “Best Coffee” in Montreal.

What are you waiting for? Vote now at Best of Montreal over at Cult MTL. Deadline is April 7th.

And, if you’re looking for how to vote to fill out your ballot, here’s how I voted:

4. Best Sports Personality / Meilleure vedette sportive

For some reason there isn’t a “Best Sports Team” or League or whatver category. So I voted for the entirey of Montreal Roller Derby’s New Skids on the Block as Best Sports Personality.

15. Best Radio Show / Meilleure émission de radio

We’ve got a lot of friends on the radio, but the fact that we had Danny Payne on the podcast gives him the vote (and that Heather B is no longer on the radio). Vote for The Pressure Drop on CJLO.

16. Best Radio Host / Meilleur animateur de radio

You know what? Even though she’s no longer on Montreal radio, she was for most of 2016. So give her the sendoff she deserves and vote Heather B for Best Radio Host of 2016.

22. Best Website / Meilleur site web

Duh, this one. 9to5.cc is the best DIY website in Montreal. We try to write comics, do podcasts and blog all without any sort of corporate shenanigans.

23. Best Twitter / Meilleur compte Twitter

Also us. @9to5cc on Twitter yo.

24. Best Snapchat / Meilleur Snapchat

You know, I don’t really use Snapchat very much, but I do know that Chris Venditto is snapchatting all the time. So I guess that’s why I’m voting for him.

25. Best Instagram / Meilleur compte Instagram

You know, we do have an Instagram, and you should follow us there. But my vote goes to the talented Tranna Wintour because let’s face it, she’s more entertaining on social media.

26. Best Podcast / Meilleur podcast

Take your pick! Vote 9to5 Entertainment System or Go Plug Yourself! Fun fact (that I’m not 100% sure of), Go Plug Yourself has been on the list for every year that we’ve been recording. Other podcasts have come and gone, but we have stubbornly pushed on. Last year we were the highest ranked English language podcast! So keep that tradition alive! Please. It’s all we have.

29. Best Bar / Meilleur bar

Grumpy’s. They let us record our podcasts there. So they’re automatically the best. That’s to say nothing of the fact that I’ve been drinking there for as long as I’ve lived in Montreal

37. Best Underground Venue / Meilleur lieu de concert underground

Is TurboHaus still an underground venue? Sergio does such a dope job running that place that it seems so well established. But they’re still pumping out underground shows so they qualify. A

38. Best Live Music Venue / Meilleur endroit pour la musique live

I got to split my love here. The best shows I’ve been to in 2016 were either a) at TurboHaus or b) at The Fairmount. TurboHaus got my vote for Underground Venue, so Fairmount is getting my vote for Best Live Music Venue.

42. Best Burlesque Performer / Meilleur artiste burlesque

My vote here is for Velvet La Touche, and not just because we’re going to be in Jamaica next month at the same time.

43. Best Drag King or Drag Queen / Meilleure drag-queen ou drag-king

Plastik Patrik hung up his heels last fall after one last run at Rocky Horror Picture Show. But this is the best of 2016, so one more time! Even though he was never really a Drag Queen (and more of a fancy, fabulous “something else”), this is still a great fit.

46. Best Comedy Club / Meilleur bar d’humour

Even though Walter no longer works there, it’s still in good hands and is offering some great comedy. ComedyWorks gets my vote.

47. Best Comedian / Meilleur humoriste

Man, I know so many great local comedians. But only one of them co-hosts a podcast with me. Here’s your vote Walter Lyng.

52. Best Band / Meilleur groupe

My vote here goes to FIGHTFACE. Who are so hardcore that at their last show their bassist got the tip of her finger chopped off. That’s hardcore.

53. Best Solo Act / Meilleur artiste solo

Did you see Nick Raz perform music for little up and coming punks at the kids’ show at PouzzaFest last year? You should have. It was dope and adorable.

59. Best Electronic Act / Meilleur artiste électro

The bed music that we use in some of our intros comes from local Electronic Producer Dan Ross. So that’s my vote. Because he loves us.

65. Best Actor / Meilleur acteur

Jacob Greco. For his stand out performance in “Burger King Commercial”

67. Best Filmmaker / Meilleur cinéaste

Local indie filmmaker Adam Reider worked on a bunch of stuff in 2016, and in 2017 he is releasing his first feature. So there you go.

69. Best Theatre Company / Meilleure compagnie de théâtre

A different Greco. TEAM GRECO. If you missed “Is This Pretentious?” last year than you missed out.

73. Best Gallery / Meilleure galerie d’art

Not only does the Mainline Gallery have some great exhibits all the time, it was also where Sarah and I rehearsed our dance routine at our wedding. Hey man, I never said I was impartial.

75. Best Cartoonist/Comic Artist / Meilleur bédéiste / dessinateur

Sophie! From the comic that I’m in! She is the best!

80. Best Wrestler / Meilleur lutteur

You know, I like to think that somehow after forcing wrestlers and wrestling promotions into other categories for years on end I played a small part in the fact that there are now multiple wrestling categories on the ballot. I’m voting for the man himself, GT, Giant Tiger (aka Jiant Tyger).

81. Best Wrestling Federation or Event / Meilleur fédération ou événement de lutte

If you haven’t checked out BATTLEWAR yet at Foufs, you’re doing yourself a disservice. Even if you’re only a little bit into pro wrestling, you owe it to yourself to not be a fool jabroni.

86. Best Barber / Meilleur barbier

Monthly Barber (aka Frank & Oak) where the likes of Craig Cousins cuts my hair and keeps me looking fresh.

111. Best Skate/Snowboard Shop / Meilleure boutique de snowboard/skateboard

Give some love to some of the talented skates from Montreal Roller Derby and support Low Life Skate shop.

170. Best Coffee (beverage) / Meilleur café (breuvage)

Tunnel Espresso. They serve me a cortado every day and put up with my ramblings on the regular. And it’s delicious.

So there you have it, my votes for Best of Montreal. Be sure to vote and support all the local acts, music, comedians, food and everything else that you love about Montreal.
