Steph Tolev joins me on this minisode to talk about getting older (is this a theme?), not having an air conditioner and how doing a single episode of Video On Trial for Much Music obviously lead directly to her performing in front of an entire hockey arena opening up for the legendary Bill Burr.

She also offers a sneak preview of what she might have in store for the Canadian comedy scene as she takes aim at the scene with her keynote address.

The Nasty Show at Just for Laughs is always one of the shows where comedy gets the rock star treatment. The show is at MTELUS, there’s a live band to hype of the crowd, and the performers are all ready to just tear it up. But this year, there’s something a little different. This is “Nasty” evolved. This is Nasty Show 2.0, proving crass comedy can still be in your face and offensive and intelligent and thought provoking at the same time.

The 2019 Nasty Show ensemble seamlessly weaves between making light of the mentally handicapped, sexual assault and more while somehow also being pro-choice and supporting gender and race equality.

Before hitting the stage I as able to have quick chats with Bonnie McFarlane, Andrew Schulz and Bobby Lee and we got to talk a little about being true to yourself in your comedy and finding your audience.

Just for Laughs 2019 Podcast – The Nasty Show (Jessimae Peluso & Big Jay Oakerson)

The Nasty Show has the (dubious?) distinction of being one of the longest running shows at the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival.

There has no doubt been quite the evolution in comedy about what constitutes “nasty” these days and most comedians are no longer quite as interested in being offensive for the sake of it. This isn’t the PC 1990s where a performer can get a rise out of an audience just by dropping the occasional slur.

The new breed of nasty comedians includes the likes of Jessimae Peluso and Big Jay Oakerson, both of whom I was lucky enough to speak with before they hit the town next week for their unique brands of off-colour comedy.

Both comedians are advocates for freedom of speech, as being able to speak your mind about what you want (and how you want) is kind of hot button topic in many comedy circles.

But from Jessimae talk about washing her taint in a public fountain and being willing to approach every set with a “full throttle” approach and Big Jay willing to continue a conversation despite a bird having just shit on his head,  it’s obvious that these comedians (and their cohorts at The Nasty Show) are not about censor themselves for any reason.

The Nasty Show is always a marquee event at Just for Laughs. In a world that some might deem overly sensitive and politcally correct the programmers at JFL have always said “that’s all well and good, but this is The Nasty Show.” This year’s edition of The Nasty Show is absolutely star studded and features the likes of Godfrey, Robert Kelly, Yamaneika Saunders, Jimmy Carr, Ari Shaffir and Big Jay Oakerson. We were lucky enough to line up most of these comedians for a back to back podcast extravaganza! Godfrey, Robert, Yamaneika and Big Jay come and go as they please and we just keep the tape rolling! Another amazing comedian from The Nasty Show stopped by to talk about podcasting, gesturing with two fingers and yes, even being a midget his whole life. Don’t criticize me for calling Brad Williams a midget, that’s what he likes being called. Littler person sounds like less than a full person and a dwarf is a mythical creature. His words. We don’t spoil how he closes his time at The Nasty Show but we do tell you what to look for on Youtube if you want to spoil it for yourself. Enjoy!gpysbrad
