John Hatz is our guest on this week’s Go Plug Yourself podcast and we ask him: What is your favorite chip? A question asked by none other than Mike Carrozza back in episode 235.

This is a podcast nearly 20 years in the making. I met John Hatz let’s say over 10 years ago and have been going to the parties thrown by his promotion company the legendary “I Love Neon” for closer to the last 20 years. But it was probably about 5 years ago that I said “hey John, you should do the podcast at some point.”

The last time I remember talking to him about it was around the holidays in 2019. “Sure, let’s do an episode around spring time when there starts being a lot of different acts coming to town!”

We all know how that went.

But now it’s 2021 and vaccines are rolling out and parties are coming back! John Hatz and I Love Neon are brining a pile of shows to Theatre Fairmount, Bar Le Ritz, Newspeak and a host of other venues around the city! Check out iloveneon.ca for their full lineup of upcoming shows.

In my notes for content for this show probably half the page or more was filled with stats about the latest escalation of human rights abuses in Gaza, and the latest escalation to the territorial pissings of the ruling elite in Syria.  Pissing in Syria of course, not that the ruling elite are actually in Syria.  Fuck no.  We leapt from subject to subject, each a new height in an already turgid tower of petty and self-indulgent musings, and I became less and less interested in visiting those subjects.

Nobody wants to hear about that shit, Jon.  Yeah, obviously, this is a podcast about geek nonsense.  I like geek nonsense.  Talking about it I get happy and excited.  Are we on the eve of the first open warfare between 1st world nuclear powers in a generation?  Will the consequences involve military intervention including Canadian combatants?  Isn’t all this worth talking about?

Of course we have geopolitical musings somewhat less erudite than our opinions on, say, the differences between the 3rd and the 3rd and a half editions of Dungeons and Dragons.

Will we look back on these days of idyll fondly?  Perhaps we will despise ourselves for doing nothing; worse: for fiddling while the world burned.

I been watching a lot of retro speed run videos on Youtube.  Crazy when you see it on the screen like that, but check it out.

My favorite video games from when I was a kid.  Played by people who fucking love those games more than most of us love anything.  The kind of persistence and dedication these guys have is probably insane, to work for thousands of hours to shave seconds (or fractions of seconds) off the world record of a 40 year old video game.

Ok so if you think that’s nuts come with me to the next level.  A Youtube charity hosts races through games.  Races done by people in the speedrunning community.  Want to watch two obsessed nerds race through the worst Zelda game?

I’ve been soaking in the news for the last few weeks.

Tuesday this week, I spent at least four or five hours tossing and turning in bed, my mind flailing against politics half way around the world that I only understand 1/10th of (if that) and that affects me in my day to day life not a jot.

Calvin prayed to his television so:  “Oh, great altar of passive entertainment… Bestow upon me thy discordant images at such speed as to render linear thought impossible!” (I got 75% of it without Binging it I swear).  Good prayer.  But he couldn’t imagine just how much the content cannon of Reddit could make TV seem tedious and stale.

Jimmy said:  “Please please please play the whole damn song / A 2 minute song is just one minute and 59 seconds / Too goddamn long” and he’s not fucking wrong.  These days if the page takes longer than a half second to load I am the fuck outta there.

This must be all tied together but I don’t have the attention span left to sort it out.

The 9ES marches on, following the pop-culture breadcrumb trail to our deepest inner truths.  After we perish, this record of our thoughts will be ripe soil for the AIs who will ape our aspects.  Why would they do this?  Because we have left them our investments, RRSPs and Bitcoins in our wills.  Human children be damned!  In the decades it takes for the AIs to be ready for this kind of activity the interest will accrue and when our cyberhomonculi access the funds they will be more faithful progeny of our essence than children of flesh and blood ever could.  Cold comfort to my corpse but the future will have to suffer me too.  Only richer.

Scott continues to outdo himself with those cover images.  What a shame we never managed to get ITunes showing the mini versions he gets me every week.  True story they’re embedded somewhere in the bits of the audio file.  Somewhere.

We’re not kidding when we said that they’re an acquired taste.  Apparently they put on insane shows and keep up their stage personas 24*7 as some kind of next level performance art thing.  I don’t know how successful that all is but they sure made a hell of a weird music video.  It’s basically perfect.  Even if you don’t like the song and find the strobing starkly contrasted colors vaguely nauseating, which would not be surprising, you have to admin there is something compelling about it.  Something driving.  What’s a video there to do, other than to grab your attention and sell an album and get you spending braincycles on their content.  Mission accomplished Die Antwoord.  Mission accomplished.
